  • Best protection from bird droppings???

I have found quite a bit of information on removing bird droppings, and in the past - too many times to mention - I've had to put a solid effort into removing the etching with ScratchX and a MF.

I'm wondering what is the best possible protection I can apply to PREVENT as much of the etching as possible. Obviously I remove the dropping as soon as I see it, but sometimes it's 24hrs and sometimes they've already done their damage...

My current arsenal of products for my paint includes:

    Deep Crystal 1/2
    NXT liquid wax
    Clay & QD
    Ultimate QD (which is amazing!)
    and ScratchX

I have a Black Pearl Jetta, so of course everything shows. I spend a lot of time detailing my car inside and out and I'm not concerned if extra effort is required. What's an extra 30 minutes when you spend 6 hours on a sunday detailing anyway??? I just want to do it right and prevent as much damage as possible.

There's nothing quite like taking that first drive with the sunroof open in a shiny black ride and having people comment on how good it looks. Not bad for a girl! Meguiars products always work great and I look forward to detailing days.

    Thanks!

    Hi.

Just to chime in, looks like you're on the right track. It seems that you wash/QD (the bird poo) as soon as you see them and you know how to work with the Scratch X and also NXT as protection . Adding to that, I am unsure of any products that can withstand long period of exposure to bird droppings (ie: 12hrs or so under the sun)

I've tried layering M21 2.0 (synthetic sealant - great stuff) topped with M16 and parked under the sun with some trees nearby. Came back 6hours plus later, bird poo galore. Quickly QD them, and stain still there. So no choice but to clean it again with some paint cleaner.

So, like yourself, I have this issue also. So what I did was to change my routine, ie: parking spot / change route (if possible)

    Hope this helps.

I'd say Nxt 2.0, and then regular washing and UQDing after would seem the best you can do.

Of course, if something is acidic enough to etch into paint and even glass on rare occasions, a microscopic layer of wax can only do so much.

I would highly suggest to keep a microfiber and body solvent in the trunk.

Re: Best protection from bird droppings???

Just wanted to add to what I said:

The point behind a wax is not to prevent etchings or such, but to delay them as much as possible. From experience, Meguiar's NXT 2.0 is to date their best protecting wax available meaning it help help delay the time before the containment etches into the paint the best. Keeping a nice coat of wax on by not letting it completely wear off is a better form of philosophy not often shared by many. I don't wait until the wax stops beading, rather I wax monthly to ensure that the car is always protected to the maximum. Now this is just me, so find a system that works for you.

What anyone will tell you though is the best form of care, not just for cars, but for anything, is frequent maintenance. This means that if possible, do not let the containments sit on your paint for long. Here in SoCal, when you get a bird bomb on your car, you only have a matter of a couple hours before it does some damage due to the hot sun (on a black car!). With this in mind, keep the towel and some product in the trunk to remove it ASAP. For most, a simple 4oz bottle from Wal-Mart's travel section and a good microfiber will do the trick just fine. If you are really obsessed, carry another towel and a small bottle of something like ColorX or M151 to clean the etchings off and restore protection.

          Hope that helps!

I would agree with a couple of products to keep in your car. Whats 5 minutes when its fresh to remove. Saves a lot of work down the road.

Re: Best protection from bird droppings???

Well it looks like I'm on the right track then. I wash/polish/wax very regularly (washing weekly and waxing monthly) and remove spot contamination as soon as possible. I keep Ultimate QD and several clean microfibers in my trunk for spot cleaning.

I know people who say they have no trouble with etching from this... For example my dad follows the same routine as me with his Chevy and he doesn't find that etching occurs. I guess there is a difference in either the clear coat, or the bird droppings.

I'm going to layer NXT and see if I can add a little additional protection.

I guess I also need to buy a house with a garage!

                Thanks.

I think that whether etching occurring depends on the bird, your paint protection, paint color, the sun and how long the "bomb" stays on the paint. Quick removal is the key.

Meguiars says the two most detergent and water resistant sealants they make is NXT and # 20 polymer sealant.

So I would go with one of those.

How do you mean, "detergent resistant?"

I carry a 4oz spray bottle of M135 and a MF towel in my car. I check for bird droppings and such before I get in, if I see something I take care of it then with a spritz of M135
