  • Significant Scratch-X problem

My hood looked quite decent with the exception of a number of water spots I couldn't seem to get off by any normal means (washing, claying, etc). So I whipped out the ScratchX and went to work on my hood. I think I did 2-3 applications with lots of "passion". The spots seemed to diminish, so I sealed with NXT Tech Wax 2.0 and left my car be. Went back the next day and saw that the hood is now showing large circular spider web swirl marks. I worked in small areas, definitely not as wide as these swirl marks, so I don't know what I've exposed, but it looks much worse than when I started. Compared to my fenders and door panels, the hood also seems to lack "depth of shine". For reference, my car is dark blue. I can take a photo if it helps.

What have I done and how do I fix it? This is an almost new car and it's very disappointing.

Sounds like you've used too much passion... remember, polishing paint is an art form not just a mechanical process, you can't just rub the paint like you're grinding on steel and expect it too look good. If you have to rub hard to remove a defect then usually you have to re-rub or re-apply more product to remove any rubbing marks you put in.

What did you use for application material?

Take heart, if you were able to remove the first defect, you can remove the defect you put in. ScratchX is non-abrasive in that by itself it won't scratch paint, so we can rule it out as the problem and focus on your application material and or your technique.
