  • No SHADE, should I wax?

What I did so far? using Meguiar foam applicator and Supreme Shine towel. Unfortunately, the sun just came out and I don't really have an area that's shaded to wax with Meguiar GC wax. Since my car is black, the surface is scorching hot!

-Dawn Car Wash to strip previous wax
    -Meguiar Gold Class Car Wash
-Meguiar Smooth Surface Clay Kit w/ QD as lube
-Meguiar Deep Crystal #1 - Paint Cleaner
-Meguiar Deep Crystal #2 - Polisher

It looks amazing in the shade and from beyond two feet away. But if you inspect really close in direct sunlight, there are a lot of fine swirls and scratches on the clear cloat. I've read I need a PC to shave the clear coat to get rid of these swirls but I don't know what exactly I need to get.

I think I need to get a DA G110 and M105 ultra cut compound?? Am I on the right track?? What quality pads do I need?

Another question. If you cut away the clear coat to even out the scratches and swirls repeatedly, wouldn't you eventually wear away the clear coat?

    Thanks.

Re: No SHADE, should I wax?

You don't need Dawn to strip wax, just by using a clay plus a paint cleaner will remove any coat of wax that remains in the surface.

Getting the G110 is a huge step, you'll get better results and faster compared to a job done by hand. You don't have to get M105, it's a great product, but Meguiar's teaches us to use the least aggressive product so I would start by using M80 Speed Glaze first.

As far as pads, I would definitely get the new pads introduced by Meguiar's just a couple of days ago
*New* For Summer 2008 - W9207 - Soft Buff 2.0 Foam Finishing Pad

*New* For Summer 2008 - W8207 - Soft Buff 2.0 Foam Polising Pad
*New* For Summer 2008 - W7207 Maroon Foam Cutting Pad

Here are some links to read that can help out
How To Remove Swirls By Hand
How much paint are you removing.
How to use the G-100 to remove swirls
Will I notice a difference if I use the G-100
What it means to remove a scratch out of anything...

    Hope this helps

Hopefully you can wait til levening to wax.... just give it a QD before proceeding.

And yes, anytime you remove paint, the coat gets thinner, so eventualy you will wear it away. However, by using mild products and proper technique, you remove so litle that you could clean the paint every 2 or 3 months with #80 for 15/20 years with no problems. And you can even go to milder products if you wanted....

That's why Meguiar's teaches us to start with the least aggressive product, no reason to start with the most aggressive combination (product/pad)

Re: No SHADE, should I wax?

Thanks a lot. I'm still learning so this is some good information. I'll try the M80 Speed Glaze by hand and if that doesn't seem to do the trick, I'll bump it up to to the M105 Ultra Cut Compound.

          My current order:
          -Meguiar Gold Class Car Wash
-Meguiar Smooth Surface Clay Kit w/ QD as lube
-Meguiar Deep Crystal #1 - Paint Cleaner
-Meguiar Deep Crystal #2 - Polisher
          -Meguiar Gold Class Liquid Wax

Where would the M80 fit into the order? Would I do it after claying? Does the M80 act as a substitute for DC #1 and #2?

          Thanks.

I was suggesting M80 if you were to use the G110.
Now if you are going to do the job by hand I would go with M105

Thanks..I gotcha...M80 by DA and M105 by hand

Where would I fit this in my order though? Can I eliminate the need for DC 1 and 2?

M80 could basically take the place of DC1 and DC2. It is more agressive than DC1 and is also very rich in polishing oils like DC2, so you would likely not see much of a difference by using DC2 after it.

M80 is a cleaner/polish, (see this Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle ), so it takes the place of the paint cleaner and the polish in the Deep Crystal Line

If you want a show car finish then "yes" you really need to get into machine polishing as you are limited to what you can do with your 4 fingers pushing down on a wax pad.

Yes, it's also really time consuming to do by hand especially when I'm claying, cleaning (dc #1), polishing (dc #2), and waxing (GC). So what I gathered from all of you helpful gentlemen, ladies as well, I think I've made my decision to go with DA G110 and M80 Speed Glaze.

As far as pads go, I think I'll go with 6.5" pads (2 each of W7006, W8006, W9006). As a result, this will be my new order:

                      -GC Car Wash
                      -Clay with QD
-Use cutting pad (W7006) along with the M80.
-Use finishing pad (W9006) along with the GC Liquid wax.

This new order will shorten my detailing time considerably with my hope of better results. Is there anything that I'm missing? Please give me some critical feedback and recommendations. I've pretty much eliminated the use of scratch X, DC #1, DC #2. And also, I don't have a use for the W8006 (Polishing Pad). What should I do with that?

Re: No SHADE, should I wax?

Thanks to all your responses and with I've gathered from you gentlemen, ladies as well, I think I'll go with the DA G110 and M80 Speeze Glaze.

As far as the pads go, I'll get two each 6" of W7006, W8006, W9006. I've read that novices should stick with smaller pads? With this, here's my new order:

                        -GC Car wash
                        -SS Clay kit with QD
-Use W7006 (Cutting Pad) along with M80
-Use W9006 (Finishing Pad) along with GC Wax

This will shorten my detailing time considerably from washing, claying, cleaning dc#1, polishing dc#2, waxing GC all by hand. Is there anything that I'm missing? Please offer any critical feedback or recommendations. I don't have a use for W8006 (Polishing Pad), suggestions?

                        Thanks.

We don't recommend using our W-7006 Foam Cutting Pad with a DA Polisher as the foam formula tends to be too aggressive for this kind of application and will haze or micro-mar some paint types.

We just introduced a foam cutting pad you can use with a DA Polisher but there's also some warning about this.

No matter which direction you plan to go with, just be sure to test on a small area first and make sure you can make one small area look good before going over the entire car.

Following up what Mike said, it's not a bad idea to use the W8207 Polishing Pad for M80. It would follow under the least aggressive method.

I would go with the w8006 pad with the #80. With the d/a, all I use the W7006 pad for is wax removal. Then the pad is covered with a microfiber bonnet. Good luck.
