  • How to find swirls with no sun?

So I am trying to detail my dad's car today, which is a black lexus is 350. I know that there are lots of swirls in it as I have seen them in the sun previously. However it is very cloudy today and I cannot see the swirls because there is no sun. How do you guys go about finding swirls without having the sun and having to pull the car into the sun each time you want to check. I have heard of swirl finder light, how much do those cost?

    Thanks, Andrew

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

First we're going to move this to Detailing 101 as that's where you should post questions, not the Meguiar's FAQ section.

Second, go to Pep Boys and spend $25.00 for a Brinkman Xeon Flashlight.

      Agreed!

I found mine at a store called Tuesday Morning. If you can't find one use regular old light bulb. It won't work as good but is better than nothing.

The dual exenon are great. But they will find every imperfection. Good luck with the Lexus.

Haha, I wouldn't say the Brinkmann can bring out everything in a paint, but it works for most paints. Doesn't work on some of the Pearl colors by Lexus though. For that, I have a trusty LED headlamp that has 4 super bright white LEDs and 2 bright red LEDs. That brought out more imperfections that my Brinkmann did on a Bamboo Pearl Lexus

Next time you see something in other light (like the sun) and not with brinkmann, try placing the brinkman far away from the car and a bit indirect at where you're looking... for me that shows even the smallest swirls in white and grey paints... best way to work with the brinkmann is when it's very very dark around... in any case, I stopped using even the dual halogens (only sometimes to see how polishes break down)

In short, Mike's answer was sweet and short... Brinkmann

Thanks for the help guys. So I went to an autozone, kragen, carquest, True value, and napa and I couldn't even find a Xenon flashlight! Is there any place that you guys know has the Brinkman?

I bought mine at Wal-Mart after reading on here how great they were.
This was several weeks ago I used it once and have not used it since my 4 halogen lights are much better on my Black car.
I was very disappointed in the Binkman also the battery will only last three minutes or less it is hard to polish a car in three minutes the 2000 watt halogens are better IMO
