Is it wrong to substitute claying with colour x?

My reasoning is after I wash my car assuming it need to be clayed. Colour X since it has cleaners on it should also strip off the contaminants on the paint.

It's not that it's wrong, it's just not the best approach.

The best way to insure that all the above surface contaminants are removed is to first use a clay bar. While a paint cleaner such as ScratchX, or a Cleaner/Wax, such as ColorX will remove some above surface contaminants, the best tool for the job is the clay bar.

The clay bar removes above surface contaminants by basically abrading them off and trapping them into itself. It is safe and very effective.

Try this simple experiment. Wash the car, use the ColorX over the entire car, then come back and clay the car. Chances are good, if you started with above surface contaminants before applying the ColorX, the clay bar will show you what the ColorX missed.

I have performed this same test at our Saturday clinics to show the ability of a Clay Bar.

While this is an extreme example, there is no way a paint cleaner or a cleaner/wax would have removed this overspray,

We did this with Meguiar's Quik Clay System.
