  • Single-stage Paint Recommendations

I have a 1992 Jeep Wrangler Sahara in Sage Green. This is a single-stage paint that has a matte-like finish to it.

I was wondering what products everyone would recommend for this type of paint. The paint is in good condition with no oxidation. I am mainly looking for a product to protect the paint from the elements, with shine, etc. not being as important factors.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If it has a "matte like" finish I would guess it's probably got some oxidation going on. Are you working by hand or by PC? If you are working by hand I would suggest some ColorX followed by NXT2.0. The ColorX will do a good job cutting through the oxidation and prepping the car for NXT2.0 all while leaving a layer of protection behind. I would follow with the NXT2.0 to bump up the gloss a little and provide longer lasting protection than ColorX alone. Make sure to post some pics when you are done!

Well, is it supposed to be a matte finish?

As far as I know it is susposed to be a matte finish. It is a rare colour, and this Jeep is the only one I've seen in person with it.

My main experience is with clearcoated vehicles, so it is possible that it has some oxidation, but nothing like I've seen on a clearcoated vehicle.

I will most likely be doing the Jeep by hand rather than with a PC.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. I'll try to get some pictures today to see if that helps any.

The problem is that adding any kind of polish and wax will likely make the surface glossier.

At least it wont be permanent if the customer disliked it, but still...

There is no problem with adding some glossiness to the paint, it's just that protection/durability is more of a concern in this case.

It's currently raining here so I haven't had a chance to get some pics, but hopefully it will clear up so that I can get some.

Deep pigmented paints respond much the same - on our black single stage car I absolutely adore #7 and #26 from the Professional Mirror Glaze range. This will give a deep, oily finish and while it is shiny, I don't think the finish is best described as glossy or brilliant. On our black car, I prefer that muted, but deep finish. Add a couple of layers of #26 for extra protection.

I'm sure someone will recommend NXT Tech Wax as some point, but I think the finish is too sterile and glossy for what you are wanting. It does give a great, durable finish (with some swirl filling), but not quite what you're after reading between the lines.

#80 and top with some Yellow wax

M80 Speed Glaze usually works really well for single stage paints to clean them and restore richness of color, gloss and depth.

Since this is a matte finish the best thing to do will be to do a "Test Spot" and see how it looks before going over the entire rig.
