  • First time with Meguiar's products & DA polisher...

I'm new to this forum, but I have been detailing cars for the past 10 years (a few years professionally back when I was younger, and more recently just as a hobby). I have almost always used Menzerna & Poorboys products, and I have always used a rotary polisher. But I got a new Meguiar's DA polisher as a Christmas gift last year, because my rotary crapped out on me after 9 years and I decided to give the DA a try since so many people seem to rave about it. I haven't really used it much yet, but just the other day I went out and bought a whole line of Meguiar's products to try out with my new DA polisher. Here is what I got:

    M83 Dual Action Cleaner/Polish
    M80 Speed Glaze
    #7 Show Car Glaze
    #26 Hi-Tech Wax
    #21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0
    1 - W7006 pad
    3 - W8006 pads
    2 - W9006 pads
    1 wool bonnet

The vehicle I will be working on is a 2003 Yukon Denali with minor swirl marks, and a couple of more serious blemishes (a few bird poop etchings, and a couple of scratches). My plan was to first wash & clay the truck (obviously), then use the M83 + W7006 pad on the bad spots, then M80 + W8006 over the entire vehicle, then #7 Show Car Glaze + W9006 , then either #26 or #21 + W9006 pad, then buff with wool bonnet.

Being a little unfamiliar with the current line of Meguiar's products, I decided to read up a bit in this forum to get some recommendations before diving into it. And I was surprised when I read numerous posts that talked about NOT using the W7006 pad with the DA polisher. Being the stubborn person that I am I went out and used it on a test spot on my truck to try it out (with the M83), and it seemed to work just fine and it got out a pretty nasty scratch. So can someone explain why it is not recommended to use the W7006 with the DA? I can't seem to find a real explanation, other then "it is not recommended".

Also, which is better as a FSP - #26 Hi-Tech Yellow or #21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0? And is the #7 Show Car Glaze necessary after using the M80, or will the diminishing abrasives of the M80 give it enough "pop" where I won't even need the #7? And how does my overall gameplan sound (M83->M80->#7->#21 or #26)?

Thanks in advance for helping out a new forum member!

Way too many questions and too much info in a single post. That is likely why no one has replied.

Break down in steps so you don't overwhelm the readers and they will be more likely to respond.

That said, the one thing that REALLY stood out was your mention of a WOOL pad. For one, you NEVER should use wool on a normal PC/G100/G110 polisher.

Furthermore, wool is a ROUGH cutting tool, so it would be your first step, NEVER your last.

Sorry if it was a long post, but I just wanted to give some background info since it's my first post and I didn't want people to automatically assume I'm some clueless detailing newbie. And I really only asked 3 questions (is that way too many?)...

      1. Why, specifically, is the W7006 not recommended to be used with a DA polisher? I tried it and got pretty good results, so I'm curious. And I even did a search, but I couldn't find anything specific, just that it's "not recommended" by Meguair's.

      2. Which wax is better - #26 Hi-Tech Yellow or #21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0?

      3. Does my gameplan sound good, or is the #7 unnecessary if I am using the M80 polish?

As for your comment about the wool pad - I said a wool bonnet, not pad. But that was a mistake, it's just a regular terry cloth bonnet, not wool.

But thanks for such constructive input, and for such a warm welcome to the forum.

Maybe it seemed like more... But thats ok..

        1. It is not that the 7006 pad (or other cutting pads) will never work, it is that on many paints they will leave some marring or scouring behind, and the average person may freak out and not know what to do. Meguiars makes sure their recomendations will work and leave a good finish 99% of the time. Esp when the product is not for a professional with more knowledge.

Did you see the link Cutting Pads a Good Idea?

        B. I am in the #21 camp...

III. On a light car, you might not really notice a difference. On a dark car, yeah, it probably would stand out a bit more.

Thanks for the info, Murr. I didn't see that thread because I did a search specifically for "W7006", and I only came up with a few threads that didn't really have much info in them. So I appreciate the link.

I was leaning towards the #21 too, because I want this to be a fairly durable finish and I know the synthetic polymer waxes tend to usually last longer (especially here in AZ, where traditional waxes don't last long because of the blazing hot sun).

I guess Lumadar hadn't had his coffee yet! Anyway, welcome. I thought your post was put together better than many you see here.

#2 You're correct about the #21. It will be more durable in that blazing sun. Many folks will "top" the #21 with #26 just for that extra "pop".

Greetings. As to another part of your question(s), I think you'll find that #80 has sufficient polishing oils after it's been worked that #7 might be redundant. A test spot with #7 after using the #80 would tell you if it's really worth the extra step.

I too love #21 (see my little motto to the left), however, I think that #26 has the right time and place too.

I like #21 on any car that I do seperate polish/wax steps (i.e. #80 first, then #21). I like #26 as a topper for cleaner waxes (like #6).

Okay, I think I've gotten answers to all my questions, thanks for your help guys!! I'm going to tackle the job today, and I'll post some before & after pics once it is done.

One more though - is it true that the #21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0 is the exact same as the NXT Tech Wax 2.0? When I was in the store, the sales guy told me that it was the same and I could save a few bucks by getting the Tech Wax 2.0 instead, but I thought I'd play it safe and stick with the pro line since I assumed it was probably a little better. But are they really the same, or is there any difference?

I believe the #21 is formulated to be used with a rotary or PC. NXT v.2 is for PC.
