  • working around luggage rack on roof?

Need to do wifes Expedition, it needs to be clayed, scratch Xed, then waxed. When I did my dually, the roof was a PITA as it has ridges and I had to do alot of the edges by hand. Thats hard when the truck is 7 feet tall and so wide I can barely reach all the spots.

    Enough griping about the dually.

How do I work around this luggage rack? Is it possible to remove it? I also have to deal with the ridges or raised areas so using the buffer isnt that effective. I have one of those power balls from mothers. Is it possible to use that with the scratch X?

After you tape it off. The best I can tell you is to get a good platform to reach the roof. Then just take your time. For all the ridges and valleys do it by hand. Get as close to the rack as possible. This is about all you can do. Good luck.

yeah, the roof is my favorite. I used cut up terry cloths and worked #80 in with some passion and put a coat of wax on her. This was on my Yukon. On an Excursion I did the same but with my yellow applicator using Color X as the roof was actually in decent shape after claying.

Not sure about the rack on your Expedition but the roof rack on our Honda Pilot looks like a complicated project to remove from the roof for a detailing session.

When I wax the roof of the Pilot I don't tape off the black, textured surface of the roof rack, I just slow down and be careful not to get any wax on it to start with.

This requires more time and patience, luckily our Pilot is smaller than your Expedition.

There was a thread here last week about these nifty aluminum stands that are about 4 feet long you can buy at places like Lowe's and Home Depot, two of these would be perfect for S.U.V.'s like Expeditions, Excursions, Suburbans, etc.
