  • Buffer/Polisher info

    Hey Guys,

I have always kept a pretty "clean" car, but since joining this board a couple months ago, I know I've been missing the boat for a long time! For the last few years, I have mostly used GC products applying by hand. I used Megs' clay kit on my '97 TL last month and topped it with NXT 2.0. The sharpness of the reflection blew me away. I get much bigger beads that sheet quicker with NXT 2.0. Now I'm preaching the virtues of claying to all who will listen.

Now, I'm ready to try a buffer or polisher that will help me remove swirl marks. I have no idea where to begin. I have priced the G110 online, have not seen it in stores. Here's what I would like to know:
    1. G110 seems pricy at $149.00. Is there a similar product that will provide me with equal or greater results for a lower price?
    2. What is a UDM? a DA? or a PC?
    3. Finally, NXT is not to be used with any of the above equipment - true or false?
I hope my post is not too lengthy. I've been learning a lot here, and I hope to learn more . Thanks!

$150 isn't a bad price for a good quality unit. The other one to look at is the Porter-Cable.

#2. UDM is the Ultimate Detailing Machine that is sold by another detailing site.
DA means Dual Action polisher which is what the Porter Cable is.
PC means Porter Cable.....a brand name of polisher that we all SWEAR by. They make the G110 for Megs I believe.
#3. False It's much easier to get a very thin coat of NXT when applied by machine.
        Black......the ONLY color!

I've done a couple searches on this site and the web since my original post, so I'm definitely more comfortable with what to shop for - either UDM or G110. I like the G110 for the accessories it has.

For the extra money, the extra power provided by the G110 will make removing swirls and scratches more efficient because of the increased ability to keep the pad rotating even when your foam buffing pads become wet with product.

End result: Faster swirl removal, this means you can detail your car faster, anyone that's used a Porter Cable DA Polisher to remove swirls out of an entire car knows how long it takes and that part of the problem is as your pads become wet with product the combination of foam, (a spongy material), and the liquid chemical you're applying acts to **** up all the power being transferred through the clutch mechanism and it shows up with the pad just vibrating against the paint and lacking all the rotating action. It's when the pad is rotating over the surface that it's most effective at removing paint and thus most effective at removing swirls.

I've been using the Porter Cable DA Polisher longer than most people outside of Meguiar's, been using the air powered DA Sanders as polishers back to 1988 when first learning about this from Meguiar's and teaching hundreds if not thousands of people how to use the DA polisher since 1988 and the difference in power as seen as increased ability to rotate the pad at the surface level while still having a clutch for safety reasons, is the first and most important factor to consider if your goal is to remove swirls and scratches without using a rotary buffer.

            FWIW

            Completely worth the extra money.

I agree, I have the G100 and have it down pretty good, but I would like to try the G110 as I believe it's a new and improved G100 or.....A G100 with bonuses.....Wish it had an ipod port though......

Having done a car by hand for a long time and having the opportunity to win my G100 here on this very forum, having either a G100/PC (Porter Cable 7424) or G110 either one will be much better than correcting paint/applying wax by hand. I had to buy the optional bottle of patience to go with my machine

I've seen G100's go for less than 100 bucks with some pads and backing plates on Ebay.....

Or....here on Meguiars.com sells them as well as ADS with packages (pads, products etc)

Great investment in my book and when you get it, cruise the threads on the PC/G100/G110 and learn things like clean pad on the fly, what products to use, cruise the show off, many put up their process on cars that help those with the same cars and what products they used to further help you....

I think it would be to your benefit to get the G110. The results are just so far superior to doing the car by hand. Also with the friendly helpful people on this forum. You would have a excellent guide to troubleshoot any minor problems you might encounter. Good luck.
