  • Is it okay to use a cheap orbital buffer?

There is a new thread posted by Raymond in 'Show off your latest detail work' http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ad.php?t=24618
where he shows the results he got by using a $19.99 random orbital buffer. Sorry if this sounds a bit inexperienced but is it "okay" for a non-professional to use a cheap buffer like this? Do you know what I mean?

Maybe I will own a G110 someday but for now it's too expensive for me and I don't get to detail every weekend like I used to. Is there anything "wrong" with using a cheap machine? If not, I wouldn't mind picking one up because for years I've been doing everything by hand and let me tell you - that's getting old!

Well, a cheaper machine will tend not to work the product into the paint as much since it will have less torque, etc, so for swirl and scratch removal, they just wont do as good.

But if all you need to do spread a mild paint cleaner, or cleaner/wax, wax, around gently, then as long as you use good quality pads/bonnets with it, you would be ok.

Applying wax is applying wax as long as you spread it around thin.

There is nothing wrong with getting a buffer like that, if that’s all you can get for now, it just isn’t as efficient as a machine like the G110. Meaning it just won’t produce the same results as easily and won’t do much at all for some defects. You may have to choose your products a little differently, as you can see he made improvements with a combination of a terry bonnet and some Scratch-X. And they are good LSP spreaders at the very least.

A machine like that is like a "gateway drug", once you take the plunge, you'll only want more!!! LOL

Seriously... I think it is a great idea. As long as you understand that a machine like that has limits, you'll be fine. I had one like that which I used for a few months and knew if definitely wanted a G110. Now that I have it, I'm ecstatic and prefer it 10000 time over the original.

However, I preferred the little orbital 100 times over working by hand. So I think it is a good step for you.

Great advice everyone. I really appreciate the feedback. I may give a cheapo gateway drug a try especially since Father's Day is right around the corner!

The cheaper buffer will be fine as long as you have realistic expectations. Good luck with it. Tell us how its working for you. Good luck.

You may want to take a look at this one http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...bital+polisher it seems to be a bit more rugged and powerful than others on the market.
