But professional detailers have to make a living detailing cars, why would you give away your secrets and techniques so someone could compete with you?

Does not make sense. In business it is war, you can't be a nice guy. If a person is your customer and wants some tips on how to take care of their vehicle between details that is different.

    Just my thought.

Yes, I agree with you. But what about that person that can't afford to pay a detailer to take care of their ride? What about that person that is bound and determined to do it themselves? Are we just supposed to let them go blindly? If that was the case, this board wouldn't be here, or Mike would be the only one giving advice.
I am a firm believer in helping someone that is willing to take the time to do it themselves. I've taught numerous people how to detail their vehicles. And those people have always referred someone they know to me. Heck, just the other day, someone came by that was having a difficult time claying and waxing their Nissan Sentra. Not only did I teach them how to do it correctly, but I also let them use my tools And in turn, that person referred a full buff and polish to me.

If someone wants to learn, I will teach them what I know.

Like I said, just use your finger as a stop block. I have done that for years and have no issues!!

ANYONE who works with ANYTHING long enough IS going to have an accident, no matter how minor. Drive a car long enough, and no matter how good you are you will have an accident...even if it's lightly tapping the car in front of or behind you when parking. 99% of these accidents are so minor, there's no "evidence" of them ever happening.

Don't sweat it, it was your own car and no one got hurt (except your pride, but that heals). Take it as a lesson...slow down and be more attentive around difficult or unusual features.

            And keep on buffing

I had a pro do my car last year around this time, and they did a fairly good job. That said, they spent about 2 hours doing what I did over 7 or so. Some of that was them being a pro and being efficient I am sure, but not all of it. I really like taking care of my car myself, I find it very cathartic, not to mention that I don't ever expect anyone to pay the same level of detail to my car that I do.

I must say, I think I got professional results on the job, save the chipping of the paint and all

I am 100% sure that I will be fully ready to get professional results without the damage next time, now that I know what I was doing wrong.

It still pains me to think of my chipped door handles though....

Sometimes it's safest and effective to just do these areas by hand with a paint cleaner like ScratchX or DCPC

I was gonna suggest the same. The only reason I bought the ScratchX was for doing door handle areas.
