  • 87 Mustang, what do you reccomend?

I just bought a 87 mustang, with a fairly fresh paintjob. But it feelsl ike sandpaper. I was thinking of trying fine cut cleaner, cuz i kno it needs to be buffed out due to the amount of orange peel in it? What would you guys reccomend? I can take some pictures of the paint if youd like. The best way i can describe the paint feeling is like sandpaper, even when im drying the car after a wash i hear the towel going over the paint.

    Hi Lynx131,

Sounds like it has dry spray, also called overspray on the finish. You might try going after this with an aggressive clay bar first to see if this works.

whoops, i forgot to mention that i bought a tub of detailing clay ( the one with the 2 bars in it ) and i used that over the whole car and that did nothing. Im not sure if its mild or agressive clay tho.

        Hi Lynx131,

The clay bar did nothing at all? As in if you were to take the clay and rub it across the finish in a small area and then dry the area off and feel it, you don't notice any difference at all in smoothness?

When you feel the surface, does it feel like overspray? Does it look like overspray?

The way you describe the finish, it sounds like overspray?

Do you own a paint cleaner like ScratchX?

How about a rotary buffer or a PC?

How old is the paint job? a week? 2 months? or 2 years? (I've met people that told me they had a new paint job that was in fact a few years old, so it's kind of relative)

i am really not sure how old the paint job is. We bought the car used but we know it has been repainted because they got over spray in the wheel wells. Yes i do have scratch X. Would scratch x be a better product to use than body scrub? I was told by my uncle that it just needs to be buffed alittle.. but i dunno

The clay bar should have done something. I guess your next step would be to try the Scratch-X on a small area to see how that does. I don't know how well Body Scrub would work in this case since it's non-abrasive.

If you have, or can get a PC or rotary, I would give that a try with some #83
