  • first time waxing...need help

i got a quick question, this is the first time i waxed my 06 taco...i got the clay kit today, clayed it with the quick detailer and then waxed it with the cleaner wax that came with it...the truck looks nice, but not the "wet" look i'm really after...i thought about using the ntx stuff, but my question is, if i do get the ntx, can i apply it over the cleaner wax i just used? or do i have to remove the wax on there now and then apply the ntx?

You can use the NXT after the cleaner wax without removing the first layer of wax. If you are looking for the real wet look. NXT 2.0 can get you pretty close and if you still want more then look into using a pure polish like #7 show car glaze or #81 hand polish before the wax on your next full detail.

Doing a full process rather than just a cleaner/wax will almost always give best results of course. Following up the cleaner/wax with a wax like Nxt 2.0 would be second best.

The color of your vehicle can also make a difference.

yeah, like i said i'm new so i assumed the cleaner wax was the "final" coat with the whole waxing process...ok so i'll got out and get the ntx tomorrow...yeah my truck is silver, so i know it's not gunna "wow" like it would if say it were black...the thing is, is where i live i have access to off street parking, unfortunitely it's right under a huge tree, so every day i have to clean up pollen, squirrel droppings and bird droppings, not to mention it's a mullberry tree, so i have fruit stains to tend to also in summer...if i had another place to park i would, but i'm kinda stuck...so i just want to try and protect the paint best i can...now giving you these details, how often would you guys recommend i completely wax the truck? i do plan on using the quick detailer as needed, which will probably be everyday with my situation...and should i go maybe two coats with the ntx right off the bat, since this is the first good waxing it will have?...thanks guys....

          Re: first time waxing...need help

A cleaner/wax can be the only step, but there is more that can be done.

One coat is fine for now, but nothing wrong with more. It is the cleaning off of droppings, etc that will be most important.

You might want to look into some of the Professional line or Detailer line detailers, like Final Inspection, Last Touch, and #135 (name escapes me, but it is related to the Ultimate Quick Detailer). They are sold in bulk, so may work out cheaper for you if this is an every morning thing.

The bird droppings and **** from the tree will do alot of damage to the paint, wax or no wax. I would get a car cover or something to protect it or a roof of some kind would be even better, if possible?

So the cleaner wax is just a wax given with the claying package and you really want to use the NXT 2.0 wax instead of the cleaner wax is this correct? For some reason the name makes me think the cleaner wax cleans off old waxes that claying didn't get. Is this incorrect thinking? If this is incorrect thinking, what should be used to clean off old waxes on a newer car? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm very new to detailing.

I did my first detail the other day\night it was a blast. Washed,Clayed, cleaner wax, NXT wax, and it looks great all Meguiars product. But, after reading this post it sounds like I should have washed, clayed, polished, NXT 2.0 wax, correct? The car is pretty new so I don't think I need Scratch X yet.

                Re: first time waxing...need help

Most of the waxes have some very mild cleaners in them, but nothing compared to the maroon bottled Cleaner/Wax, ColorX, etc.

A product like Nxt is meant for prepped, or like new paint, that is paint that has just been cleaned/polished, or paint that is in great shape, no dirt/contaminants, etc.

A cleaner/wax cleans/polishes/waxes in one step on its own, or can be used to prep the paint for a second coat of a regular wax like Nxt, Gold Class, etc.

ScratchX is only needed for swirls and scratches, if you dont have them, you dont need it. A milder cleaner like Deep Crystal #1 can be used for regular cleaning, or one of the cleaner/wax products.

Hope that helps, or ask some more.

                  Great Thank You.
One more ?, I think. So, the cleaner\wax I believe A-12 will remove the rest of the old car wax that claying didn't get? If not, than what do detailers do to remove old wax? Ok, that is two questions. :-)

The cleaner/wax will remove any wax on the surface and leave wax at the same time as it cleans, polishes and waxes in one step.

You can use any of the below by hand or machine to clean the paint to a fresh base

Thanks Mike and Murr1525. I don't have a machine at this time but maybe someday.

                        Re: first time waxing...need help

I have been following Cleaner/Wax with Meguiars #21. I may try ColorX instead of Cleaner/Wax. I use the clay first as well.

My vehicles are both fairly new--about 16 months old-- and have only been hand washed. So they don't show any signs that I can see of even fine swirls (on silver and bronze vehicles). I've looked in the sun and that's about all that matters to me. If I need special (halogen) lights to see the swirls then I don't care about those...

If I get significant swirls I plan to use #80. In that case I probably won't need the cleaning of Cleaner/Wax and might then double the #21. Is there any value to "Cleaner" if I've already clayed and then polished with #80?

I think the process is working well, since I see very little dirt in the applicators and pads. And even my clay-- medium blue-- wasn't all that dirty.

Clay & Polish a New Car?

Hi - I'm getting ready to wax my new silver Accord Coupe for the first time. I have had all of 10 days and it already has a nice Honda clear coat shine but I want more so I'm going to NXT it.

I wondering if I need to use Clay on such a new car or just do a: 1. Wash - 2. Mag's Cleaner Wax - 3. NXT 2.0 paste?

Also would it help to use a polish step after the cleaner wax along with the above on such a new car as far as shine goes?

Again, it is silver so I am just looking for a nice wet mirror finish and protection, I understand that such a light color will not have much depth. I will be using Ultimate Detailer daily and NXT Spray Wax after hand washes.

What do you guys think about the Claying and the Polish on my new beauty?

                          Thanks.

                            Hagfan;

I was using the same combo as you. I switched to #66 and the 321-2.0 What a big differance. At least in my eyes. Give it a try.

You definitely need a quality cover. No way can you prevent the damage caused by these contaminants with just wax.

I have used NXT on a Silver Tacoma and it looks great. However, ColorX looks just as good and it has a cleaner in it.
