  • First full detail questions

I'm hoping that someone can verify that I'm doing the right steps on my new truck. It's a 2008 Silverado (Dark Blue Metallic) that is only 4 months old. I wash it with Gold Class wash about once a week. It is already getting swirls all over. I think it's either from me not using the 2 bucket method or maybe from using the chamois too hard when drying. Also, the surface is a little rough to the touch after washing. So I'm planning to do the following steps.

    1)Wash and dry
2)Use Meguiar's Clay bar kit with Quik Detail and microfiber towel
3)Apply 2 coats of NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0

Now do I need to wash again after the Clay Bar? Does all this sound ok to do with the truck only being 4 months old (and being the Dark Blue Metallic)? Am I missing anything or doing too much? I want to get the process perfect for my problems. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What are you using for wash media? Sponge, microfiber mitt, etc...

You do not need to wash again after you clay.

Did you notice any swirls that came with the truck from the dealer? Thats common also...

At any rate, the things you mentioned above will get the surface cleaner, but you will still have to think about using a paint cleaner to completly clean the paint and remove the swirls if they bother you. Here are a bunch of links to browse though....

Well, I'm using a microfiber sponge (I think it's just a regular sponge wrapped in a microfiber cover). I'm starting to think that most of the swirls did just come on the truck from the dealer. And they really are not that bad, I was just hoping that those steps I was going to do might be a quick fix. The finish is still very shiny and looks perfect from a few feet away. I do worry about the contaminants that are rough to the touch on the surface. Will these bond to the finish if left for too long?

Man, I'm glad I don't have kids. I'd probably never let them leave the house as much as I stress about this truck.

Make sure your sponge is a bit plush at least, not like a real smooth MF towel.

Other than that, along with the 2 buckets/Grit Guards, good quality towels, etc, you cant do much more to prevent swirls.

If the surface is rough after washing, the things have already bonded to the surface.
