You will be looking for clarity of the paint surface. By that i mean you will want to look for any below surface defects that may still be left behind. Once you have fully removed the defects and the paint looks new again you can move on to the next area. For inspection of the paint you want to also make sure you are using good lighting weather it be the sun or as many of us like the halogen light which will really make any little defects like light swirls visible. You want to stick to small sections to make sure you give each area appropriate attention and also to fine tune your technique so once you find the method to make that one area meet your satisfaction you can just duplicate that process to make the work go by a little faster.

Yes when working with a wax like NXT it is meant to be applied on an already prepped surface. The surface should meet your satisfaction before applying the wax. Just like if you apply a wax over an faded surface you will be left with a protected faded surface. While NXT can offer great results giving that deep wet look it will not clean the surface and that should be done with a good paint cleaner prior to waxing.

I've also made it a habit to wipe down the area with 50/50 water and isopropyl alcohol mixture to remove any polishing oils that could be masking swirls that remain.

You would be looking for clarity, depth.
What I mean by this is that if you are trying to remove all the defects then you would be looking to see if you remove them all and as well as depth, see if the paint looks milky, if it does (usually on dark paints you can distinguish better) then use a product like #80 or a pure polish to enrich that paints gloss by adding those essential oils
