  • Interior carpet cleaning question

Ok so i was talking to a local carpet and leather restorer today and he was telling me about a mixture he has been using that really destroys stains on carpet like nothing else and he has not seen any problems with carpet color fastness in 16 years. Well the mixture is 1 cup of ammonium about a shot glass of TriSodium Phosphate mixed in a gallon of water. I am going to check it out in the next few days on some test areas but just wanted to see if anyone has any experience in using this formula and what type of results did they see or have you heard anything about this?

Ammonia is some pretty strong smelling stuff, can't help but wonder if mixing these two substances might not create something that could be dangerous to smell or get on your skin.

    Good luck...

Back from the day of using a blueprint machine in the office I can't stand the smell of ammonia. That's some strong stuff. It makes my eyes water and takes your breath away when I had to run lots of copies.

I agree and i asked him about the smell because i could not imagine soaking someone interior carpet with this smell but he said he has not noticed a bad smell. Maybe there is a chemical reaction that takes away some of the smell or something. Either way i will be taking all precautionary measures when working with new chemicals ( gloves, eye pro, mask ect.. ) Oh and just wanted to add, I will not be testing this on any customers car I have a seperate vehicle for the testing

Me thinky I would leave the experimenting to the chemists.

I agree with Mike on the smell too.

                        Re: Interior carpet cleaning question

I've started using the following... I'll spot the carpet, then I'll use a dry cleaning system that we use with our residence. (Put out by Orreck) With the residence I have a floor machine that does the work. With the auto carpet I do the following : Spray the release mist, spread the white dry cleaning power, then I use my dual action with one of the brushes I got form ADS, then in about 30 minutes it is dry and I use my shop vac.

Does an absolutely great job. Was thinking about doing on a friends car taking pictures and posting. Also it really gets the odors out... Seems like it would be a great commerical way to go as well.

Ive done the ammonia trick , but not the tri-sodium. The ammonia works great , but yes the smell while working with it is bad . When the carpets dry all the oders are gone , and the carpets smell fresh. You put 1 cup of ammonia in 1 galoon of water. You dunk a towel in the solution and wring it out. You simply just wipe the carpet , and then follow with a dry towel. The ammonia pulls the dirt to the surface. No wet vac needed , and you dont have to vacuum later. Just a light wipeing does it.
