  • Hi-Tech Body Sponge: same idea as a Quick detailer?

I saw this on ADS and can't see how this could compare with Megs clays.

I assume it doesn't "enfold" the contaminants and so I would not use it without some good advice. They say you can drop it and rinse it off, so the crud has to be on the surface.

How about using it after dusting and Quick Detailing a recently washed, clayed and waxed daily driver? Not the whole car, just "spots" where the defect is tougher than usual?

BTW, I decided to wash my car last december, so I signed up here before doing so. Five months later, I finally:

    1. Washed with Gold Class
    2. Clayed with Megs Clay Kit.
    3. Polished with #7 (I already had it.)
    4. NXT 2.0 (2coats, 12hours, practiced taping)
    5. PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish on headlights.
    6. #40 on trim/tires/wheel wells.

wow.... I love the look of envy as I pull up next to a brand new BMW in my "original ower" 1988 Civic.

Extremely grateful for the all the information. Nice to not have to worry about finding great products and advice from "vetted" members.

I have plenty of defects and will share my mistakes with pictures. I just needed to get some protection and got carried away. I still can't believe it.

Two things I need to work on: leverage and concentration. It took a week to do all the above. One section at a time, making mistakes and doing the next section the next day. Lots of wasted motion.

    Thanks for the great forum.

Well i have never used it but it looks interesting. I am always a sceptic on trying new products. Espectailly something that claims to replace a claybar and is reusable but its only going for 12.95 if you get what i mean by that. Me ill stick with my clay but it would be interesting to see how well it works and what type of contaminents it pulls up as well as how agressive the polymer rubber is on your paint surface.

I would just hold off on using the product all together unless you wanted to try and use it to see how it works to replace the claying process only because im not sure how well it works and if you try and use it on the already waxed surface and the product does what it is supposed to then it will be removing your wax protection.

Re: Hi-Tech Body Sponge: same idea as a Quick detailer?

I used the high tech body sponge right after it came out, like the 2nd week.
I was not impressed. First, I used it on a white vehicle. It left black streaks on the paint. The black streaks were from the rubber tranfering from the sponge to the paint.
Second, with clay, when it picks contaminates up, it traps them inside the clay. Keeping it off the surface of the vehicle when you're moving it accross the paint. With the body sponge, it has no where to go. So it just sits there, between the sponge and the paint. If you pick up something abrasive, it will scratch the vehicles paint.
Third, I am a mobile detailer. All of my products sit in the van all day long when they are not in use. The rubber face on the body sponge melted after just 3 days, just sitting inside the van. It can not handle the heat.

These are just my personal observations. Not sure it everyone had the same problems. I'm sticking with good old fashoned clay.

This topic has been discussed few times before but briefly, body sponge (aka Elastrafoam) has pros and cons:

        1) It is almost guaranteed to marr your paint, but if that is OK with you (because car is in the bad shape and you will be correcting a lot afterwards anyway) you can use it as a cheap and quicker replacement for aggressive clay.

        2) It's disadvantage when working with paint becomes advantage when doing windshields/widnows.

Glad you posted about this jossy, I've got one and forgot about it. LOL!

Also have some test hoods that I will do some test with it, have heard that alot of people don't really trust it on paint but do love it for their windshield.

I think I will hold off. It probably has a place, but I don't want to experiment. Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the comments. Looks like a good product for windshields in the summer time. And maybe daily driver wheels? More for an experienced eye and a good lubricant. Definitely not for a beginner.

[This is for a future post, but, even though I am starting on the interior, I am thinking ahead about the engine. Wanted to start wiping it down today by hand(where I can reach). I am going to just use water and a cheap rag as I am unsure if any Megs cleaners can be used to wipe and then left to dry. I read some posts about using a detailer to clean. But this might be for a future post after more research.]

              Thanks again for the comments.

Did one panel said eF that and used good old clay. Will never use it again. It is useless.
