  • DA Polisher for a rookie...

So I've been dabbling in the world of orbital polishers and I decided I REALLY like using a machine (as opposed to working by hand). As a result, I think I have convinced wifey to buy me the DA polisher and accessories from ADS.

    Here is my question:

I have two cars and I am a recreational detailer. I *may* do the odd other car beyond my own (for a friend - not paid). I have NO formal training in using a DA polisher and I was hoping for a class in NJ before I bought one, but I too impatient to wait.

Both my cars are less than 2 years old and neither is of a color that would show substantial swirl marks (white and silver). In fact, my car (which is garaged parked) has never even been hit with a drop of rain (yet) .

I'm sure if I put them under the proper light, they might be in need of a mild correction, but I think they are both in good shape.

So, having said all that, what should I buy (in terms of supplies) to supplement the DA polisher (pads and products). Here's what I already have at home (my personal inventory):

    1 DC Paint Cleaner
    1 Show Car Glaze
    1 Nxt Tech Wax
    1 Nxt Tech Wax 2.0
    1 Gold Class Wax
    1 NXT Speed Detailer
    1 NXT Wax Spray
    1 Quik Detailer
    1 UQD
    1 Vynil Cleaner
    1 Megs All wheel Cleaner
    2 clay magic clay bars
    2 Interior detailers
1 Mother's mag and rim cleaner
    1 Poorboys Wheel Sealant

    1 - 6 inch foam bonnet
    1 - 7 inch foam bonnet
    1 - 6 inch microfiber bonnet
4 - 10 inch mf bonnets (from old orbital)

I think that probably covers most of what I have. I figure I should get some #80 or #83 but what else? As I said above, this is strictly a hobby for me, but I want to make sure I have enough products and supplies to do a competent job (ie: I want enough pads to be able to just switch them out when doing a full detail).

    Thanks.

Get a bigger #80 and a smaller #83, and pads, and that is all you "need".

I would at least get the case of six pads, if not more. 1 7006 (Do not use directly one paint), 3 8006, 2 9006. And a pack of 6 MF bonnets for use over the 7006 pad to remove wax.

After that, we can always add more and more products, esp from the Detailer Line, like APC, etc.

I would also get the dvd on how to use the DA. It is a very good reference tool for beginners to intermediate. You will find yourself going over it numerous times to you get pretty good at using it.

I concur! I can't stress how helpful the DVD is for noobs to the PC/G100/G110/UDM. I have recomended it to everyone who is looking to step up to an orbital polisher. Best part is that it covers a LOT more than just use of the polisher. An excellent Job by Mike Phillips on the DVD!

Purchase the DVD by SCG; some 80,83, and Smooth Surface Clay Kit.

Also some 8006, and 9006 foam pads.

                3Fitty,

I know ADS has a mix and match 6 pad case for I believe around 50 bucks. I would also suggest getting more 8006 pads. I have at least 4 per product. 4 for 80,4 for 83 and 4 for 82. From advise here and from personal experience I find that depending on the size of the vehicle being detailed I change to a dry pad after a 4th to a 3rd of the vehicle is complete due to pad saturation which prevents the pad from spinning which in turn limits/stops paint correction. The dry pad will continue to spin easily and will help correct defects better. I also designate pads for specific product and don't cross use pads with other products. Just my 0.2 on this.
