  • House paint all over exterior paint of vehicle..

I just picked up a vehicle to work on restoring, and it was sitting next to a house that was painted white obviously.

How do I remove that with out killing the automotive paint?

If its dry, you need to use a clay bar on it.

It looks like overspray so claying the car should take care of it pretty easily.

Hopefully one kit of clay will take care of it all. It depends on how much overspray is on it and the type (water, oil base etc.).

If the clay in the Smooth Surface clay kit isn't strong enough to remove the paint overspray then try either the Detailing Clay - Mild or the Detailing Clay - Aggressive with plenty of lubricant such as the Quik Detailer in the Smooth Surface Clay Kit.

Claying should take care of the it. Post some more pics after you clay the car. Good luck.

I'd get the mild professional clay. It works better than the Quik clay, and you may end up having to get it anyways. Plus, there may be some left over for you since there is so much!

I'm gonna go hit it real quick right now before the rains come, I've never clayed a car before but the kit came with a large bottle of quick detailer, so I guess I spray that on the vehicle, and rub the clay over it, to keep it moisturized and pick up the paint and dirt on the automotive surface i assume?

Alright, this was about 15-20 mins in the same spot.. Remember please, this is a 1989 Isuzu Trooper with some pretty bad paint.

You guys told me to practice on an old vehicle, I bought an old vehicle and I am practicing.. so before anybody asks why I am even bothering to try and remove paint specs when there are dents, and dings, and scratches... I'm learning.

The only before photo I have is the first one, sorry!

What I noticed: Claybar is too mild for some of the really big drops, big meaning the size of a small freckle. The ones that came off with some effort, were the pin sized ones which I could scratch off with my finger nail, the others... wont budge with the clay, or my finger nail. I went over this entire vehicle previously, with Meguiars Color X and washed it yesterday after the Color X.

After I applied the quick detailer spray, I used the claybar back and fourth, and tried a circular motion also to see which technique would work best... they are both the same with the right amount of pressure.

The results, were simply put "worth the cost or the clay kit" This is a 20 year old vehicle, thats been outside it's entire life, and the previous owner didn't wash it for an entire year. The photos speak for themselves:

Pretty amazing what 15 minutes can do, but theres still drops left as you can see, the claybar isn't going to get all of them off some are reall adhered nicely... can I use some sort of light cut compound and rub it in by hand possibly and cut them out?

As mentioned before you may need to go with a more aggressive clay. If you used Meg's Smooth Surface Clay kit then that is the most mild of Megs clays. Look under the Mirror Glaze line at the Detailing Clay Mild and Aggressive. You may need to step up to one of those for the paint that did not come up with the Smooth Surface Clay Kit. On another note beware when using a aggressive clay such as Megs Detailing Clay Aggressive, you can easily cause marring in the paint if not careful. Also you mentioned the quick detailer bottle in the Clay kit, That is used for the clay lubricant so the clay can glide smoothly over the paint surface and not stick and damage the paint as I'm sure you figured out from using it on your vehicle.

Re: House paint all over exterior paint of vehicle..

                          Tough nut to crack.

Getting more abrasive may remove the house paint splatter but will instill scratches into the paint while removing paint and then the remedy of removing these scratches will require removing even more paint.

So it can get difficult and complicated.

You can try what's called a plastic razor blade, if you use it carefully you might be able to remove the paint splatter and keep any scratching to a minimum.

There may be a commercially available chemical for overspray removal, I've heard of a product but don't know any product names or the names of any company that makes it, even if there is such a product it's going to be a hit-or-miss situation where it either will or will not work on the type of paint that makes up the splatter on your car's finish.

Maybe someone else has experience and can chime in.

Have you tried Mineral Spirits? How about Goo Gone or Goof Off and some rubbing?

Well i do have some experience in bad paint splatter on a vehicle but my method may not be highly recommended . Also i would not suggest using this method until claying has failed. I use pure super degreaser and spray it on the area in need and don't let it sit for too long because it can stain the paint. Let it sit for about 15 seconds and then hit it with a pressure washer. If you don't have one you can use one at any of those do it yourself car washes that have the pressure washers. I used that method and got amazing results to remove heavy paint splatter all over the wheels and wheel wells and the paint. Here is a pic of some of the paint splatter. I know this is not a good shot of the paint on the surface of the car but its the best one i have at the moment

Ok i found a few other pics of the paint on the surface of the vehicle.

Notice all the paint splatter on the paint and in the fender wells and side rails

after one pass of the super degreaser and pressure washer
