New need help.

I am new to detailing however i have been reading on here for awhile so i know the steps but i was just curious about a few things.

I have a black Cobalt that have a bunch of little scratches all over it. So far i bought the clay kit and am planning on getting the next gen 2.0 paste, #7 glaze, and scratch X. I was thinking of doing the whole car by hand with scratch x and the clay also i wasn't sure if i needed the deep crystal paint cleaner or not..

Both ScratchX and DCPC are "Paint Cleaners", so typically you only need one.

Removing scratches and swirls, especially those random, deeper scratches here and there in the paint is usually hard work by hand because modern clear coat paint tend to be hard, not soft, this makes it hard for you to remove small particles of paint surrounding each scratch and that's how you remove scratches... you remove a little paint.

We introduced a new aggressive compound in our Professional Line called M105 Ultra Cut Compound and we've personally been switching to this to remove defects by hand as it works faster because of the type of abrasives it uses. You can only get it in quarts at this time and have to either locate a PBE store or order it online.

You can give the ScratchX a try first and see if it's working on your car's paint, (paint types are all different, you don't know if your car's paint is easy or hard to work on until you go out into your garage and start testing to see what you can do), and if it's not working for you then you can consider trying the M105

You might also want to look into getting into machine polishing as it's a lot easier and faster with better result than working by hand.

o really? thanks for the advice. My paint seems to chip easily it always makes me wonder if Chevy puts a clear coat on there new cars. Also would a hand buffer work? because i can't afford a DA at the moment.

I noticed that there are microfiber,wool, and terry cloth bonnets for these bufffers..is there a specific one i should use for a better outcome? Also i saw this http://www.partsamerica.com/productd...egoryCode=3373 for real cheap but im not so sure if its quality will stand up.

Chip as in a rock / stone chip?
These rocks travel to fast and the metal will bend so I really don't think, in todays market you'll find a clear coat technology that will resist rock chips. Maybe some are harder than others and could resist more but there are some that are really hard and damaging.

Do you mean a orbital buffer? Does it looks like this?

What we refer to as Traditional Orbital Buffers or Polishers are good for spreading products out over the surface, they're really not good for removing paint so they're really not good for removing swirls as the way you remove swirls is by removing a little paint, kind of goes back to the hardness issue with modern clear coats.

The machine will safe you from using your arm and hand to spread a product out so if that sounds appealing then go for it.

Well i was thinking about using the orbital buffer for the polishing step but if it really doesn't matter that much then i'll save my money.

I say save your money. If your in shape enough to do it all buy hand then there is no need for that type of buffer.

And if you're not in shape... then just do a panel a day, like one day do the hood, another day do a door, etc.

The machine will take the physically work of moving your hand in circles on the paint, it will tend to do a better job than your hand of applying a product if for no other reason than it will not get tired.

The type of machine you're looking at just won't be effective at removing swirls which is why most people get into machine cleaning and polishing.

You could always try the machine and if you don't like it then return it, just purchase from someone with a satisfaction guarantee.

I was like you at first. I bought an orbital buffer like the one pictured but saw that it did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to my paint. I decided to take the leap and buy a worthwhile machine (G110) since it has the capabilities of removing defects.
