Is there an easy way to determine the material and finish of a vehicles wheels. I have no problem recognizing chrome, however, I don't know how to determine if a wheel has been anodized, is aluminum alloy, and or is clearcoated.

Re: How do you determine wheel finish?
Anodized, not sure.
In my experience, I use NXT All Metal Polysh and if the pad turns black, it is not clear coated, if it doesn't turn black, it's clearcoated. I've seen a lot of wheels and you can see the grooves in the wheel from being machined then clearcoated. Not all the time thoughPainted same rule, no black, painted
The pad will turn black quickly as I cleaned the areas of where the clear coat on my Yukon aftermarket wheels had flaked off.
On an Excursion though, I did use NXT All Metal Polysh and the pad did turn black (thinking they were polished after that), but it was soooo dirty that once cleaned, the pad did not turn black, thus a better cleaning was involved and then I used ColorX to clean them up and wax them.
Best bet is to contact wheel manufacturer or dealer if it's original equipment.
Clearcoated and painted wheels can be treated as the paint on your car. But...contact the wheel manufacturer just to be safe.
