  • Help!!

Right, a few months ago i unwittingly took my car to VW for a "machine polish". It is now a total mess, buffer marks everywhere, swirls galore and very dull. I will attch pics if someone can tell me how, but its pretty bad!! Please can I have some correction advice so I like my car again?? eg. by hand or do I need to buy a meguiars polisher, products, combinations etc.

Much appreciated! I have some basic knowledge of car detailing but need some extra guidance. Thanks!!

    Re: Help!!

you can always try scratchx by hand. remember to put a little passion behind the pad. do a test spot with a couple passes of scratchx if you prefer to work by hand and see what the progress is like. if you like what you see repeat that process over the whole car. it would be a lot easier if you at least has a pc. your arms will thank you if you do not have to do the car by hand, especially if you have to do multiple passes.

      Re: Help!!

Chances are the only way to really fix it will be to machine clean and polish the paint, you can undo the damage by hand but it will be a lot of work.

Your story is the rule, not the exception, you just can't trust dealerships, body shops and even most detail shops to turn out quality work.

That's why forums like this have become so popular, most people find that the only way to fix the damage the right way is to either seek out a qualified Professional using a forum like this or learn to do it yourself.

Sorry to hear of the mishap.

Thanks guys. I have tried scratch x and it didn't make even the slightest difference! If I buy a machine, which polish etc do u think I should buy? Also, they are buffer marks, so will they come out?

Also forgot to ask, when it comes to waxing with the NXT Tech Wax, is it best to do it by hand or with the DA polisher? And if with the machine, which type of pad....polishing??

          Thanks in advance

            Re: Help!!

How many passes of ScratchX did you try? Putting a lot of passion (elbow grease) means a lot.

As far as machines go, try the new G110 or if you can find one, G100/Porter Cable 7424 (one in the same). Meguiars Online sells the new G110 or Auto Detailing Solutions has combinations that they sell with pads and products.

As far as polishes go......(after a good claying)

M80 is a great polish to start with
M83 is more aggressive and follow up with M80 if needed.
Always start with least aggressive. I have them both and use them.

I always liked to put wax on by hand, but then tried putting wax on with my G100 and loved it. The G100 spread the wax in a nice thin layer to easily remove it once it cured. I used a finish pad (9006). Use the 8006 when polishing (polishing pad )

The articles that Murr put up above are great readings for you to check out.

with everything here and just to add, it may take 3 or more applications of scratchX before you can see the results if the swirls or scratches are real bad. Also like stated about put some passion behind the pad. Dont be afraid of it and what type of pad are you using. If you have not already try a terry cloth for a little more bite and that should help you out. Then you will have to go back over it with something a little less agressive like a foam pad to remove the marks left from using the terry.

                Re: Help!!

I've heard that VW paint is really hard, so if ScratchX didn't work, you might need to step up to a rotary.
