  • Ziebart finish?

    Hello,

In the last couple of months I've had the desire to machine polish/wax my truck. I've watched the how to video and purchased a 4 1/2" orbital buffer. I have a 99 GMC Sierra Stepside which I purchased last year. The original owner had been appling on a yearly basis Ziebart's Diamond Gloss finish. The paint is in great shape , but there are some swirl marks in the finish, which I would like to remove. Do I need to do anything different when using Meguiar's polish/cleaner and wax on this type of finish? I was preparing to purchase #80 and NXT 2.0. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Did you get a Porter Cable buffer?

#80 should work out great but I like to keep #83 on hand just incase #80 cant give me the results Im looking for.

A traditional orbital polisher usually isn't strong enough to remove swirls, you remove swirls by removing paint. See this thread,

What it means to remove a scratch out of anything...

The Ziebart product is a paint sealant, most people would equate this to or think of this as a type of car wax, i.e. it protects the paint and makes the paint look good.

Any type of paint cleaner that you use that's strong enough to remove swirls and/or scratches is going to also remove the Ziebart product, so after you clean your truck's paint, (cleaning means removing the swirls), you're going to have to re-apply some type of paint protection product whether that's another coat of Zeibart or some other brand of car wax.

Can you tell us the name of the polisher you bought or does it look like any of the machines shown here,

        Re: Ziebart finish?

Thanks Mike for your reply. I have a Porter Cable 7424 random orbit polisher. In regards to the swirls, they are very light.

        Thanks again.
