Our city water is well water and contains a LOT of calcium. We have had a whole house watersoftener for many years, and would not be without one. Currently have one calle dthe Water Boss, which is very compact and would even fit in a closet if necessary. Don't know if they are still in business or not.

Mike, you can get an automatic one for ~$400. They use 1/4 of the salt that the old manual ones did - I use maybe one 50 lb.bag a month.

The reason the new ones use less salt is that they have a little flowmeter in them and only regenerate the resin once a certain number of gallons have passed thru. The old ones used to regenerate every night whether you needed it or not.
