Water magnet not so magnetic anymore

I started using a Water Magnet towel to dry last summer. If I water blade the car first, I could always complete the job with one Water Magnet towel. I liked that setup.

It seems as though the towel has lost a lot of it's absorbing qualities lately though. It just kind of smears the water around for a while and then eventually starts to soak in. It used to **** water up right away.

I've never washed it just because it seems like it should be very clean since it's only wiping up water off a clean car.

Should I wash it and with what soap?

All 3 of mine do the same thing. I have found if you spray it with QD it will make it pick water up...sometimes.

Hey guys,

I actually have the same issues with the water magnet and I have washed it. I use the Absorber to get the bulk of the water and then come back with the water magnet.

After going through about 5 of these things I finally gave the Absorber a try and its my new drying towel. I've used them for about a month now and haven't had any problems what so ever. They seem to need to be wrung out more often but they dry very well.

I would suggest giving the Absorber a try, its cheaper, works better and comes with a storage tube.

I use a good ol Meguiars Microfiber towel after running water unresisted by a nozzle if you will then dry it off, some wringing to do on larger vehicles but it works for me. I use my off brand MF towels for the door jambs etc.

Sometimes you have to rejuvenate the fibers. Give your magnet a good cleaning in the washing machine. In the rinse cycle use about a 1/4 cup of vinegar. This seems to wake up the microfibers and restore the towels. Give it a try. What do you have to lose. .50 fo the vinegar.

I'm using the new "method"
What I do is that I use Meguiar's Microfiber Soft Touch Drying Cloth and then I use the Water Magnet

The Meguiar's Microfiber Soft Touch Drying Cloth absorbs all the water that is left in the surface and I believe more effective and efficient compared to the water magnet, but then I use the water magnet because in my eyes it leaves the finish perfect

I have been using this process with all my MF towels for the past couple of years and the vinegar rinse restores them to near new condition. Keeps them soft and absorbent and white vinegar is cheap.

For me, in my experience it doesn't. Following with water magnet leaves a great result.

You can do what J.A Michaels says, vinegar rejuvenates the fibers so give this a try

The trick is the vinegar in the final rinse cycle of the wash.

Oh Yeah, double check the dryer to make sure one of those "stinky Kleenex things" (softener sheets) are not lurking left over from the regular household dryings.

But they do eventually wear out.

In my quest to improve my towels,

1. Use less detergent especially in HE washers. The need for vinegar or a second rinse is usually the fix for too much detergent. This applies to all clothes. Excess detergent also causes mildew issues in front loaders too and a sour smell in clothes.

2. Many washer/dryers have residue from added softeners in wash or towel sheets in dryer. If the last load had some softener, it can get into the next load. In our Kenmore HE washer, the washer will run water through the softener and bleach dispensers even if nothing is there so residue can get added back on the next load.

I bought a bottle of Micro Fiber Rejuvenator (detergent) from a competing manufacturer (starts with a P). Save your money and stick with the vinegar as suggested.

I run vinegar in both rinse cycles everytime I wash any detailing towels. Only spraying QD or QW on the towels prior to use seems to make them pick up water.
