  • Leather Clear Coat?

How do I tell if my seats have a clear coat on it? I applied a very thin layer of the Lexol conditioner and the seats seems to soak in the conditioner REALLY fast.. So does this mean I do not have a clear coat on the seat?

    FYI: I have a 2008 Accord

    Thanks

    Re: Leather Clear Coat?

    Hi:

I find a lot of confusing information about which leather seats are coated or not coated. Also, if a leather seat is coated how should you care for it; I have received vastly different recommendations on how it should be done. It is my understanding that most new cars have coated leather ??? So most of the traditional leather product (IMO) should not be used on coated leather, since you are not working on leather.

One hint is how the owner's manual tells you to care for them. If it says to use a cleaner type product only them it is a good chance the seat is coated.

The other test I have seen used is to place a drop of water about the size of a pea on a horizontal surface. If the water soaks in the leather is not coated, if it stays on the surface then the seat has a coating.

Not a scientific test but it is one way to determine if they are coated.

Maybe someone can provide more information.

I agree, many variables can make the water bead on the leather surface. I personally find that water beading is a poor indicator in surface condition in general, leather or paint.

The water test on leather is the only way I have found so far that may help to determine what type of leather seat you actually have.

That's what I was getting at, if there is a protectant on the leather though, the protectant may not allow the water to soak in.

The beading is a just a general, for the most part, indication of protection or not.
