  • Please walk me through the steps to get a hologram free finish

Hi everyone. I've been reading the threads in the past few weeks, lots of info and great help.

I paint some car parts every once in a while(I'm a hobbyist). Recently, I purchased a Makita rotary I've used it 3 times so far on the parts I painted (all black) and I got holograms.

    I have the following pads/compounds:

Meguiars Solo kit (2 wool pads, 2 foam pads and Solo polish)
    Meguiars M105 compound
    #82 swirl free polish

First, I sand the surface by 1500 sandpaper to remove the orange peel/dust nibs. Then I use the Burgundy wool pad and M105 compound to remove the sanding scratches. Then, I use the black foam pad and #82 polish.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Read the following links, it could help

How to avoid swirls and holograms?

You're questions and problems with holograms have come up in the past and are explained in detail in the links that yalerd has posted.

So read through those, then get a dual action polisher to do your final polishing work and that way you won't have to depend upon the rotary buffer and your skill level to create a swirl free finish, as well as cross your fingers that the paint system you're working on will be easily polishable with the results a swirl-free finish.

You have most of what you need, now you just need a machine that oscillates instead of just rotates.

      Welcome to the machine(s)

Thanks for the reply. Yes I saw those threads but I was hoping someone would walk me through using the rotary buffer/pads I already have.

First I'll use ScratchX and apply it by hand (like the method used on the green Mercedes), if its too much to be done by hand I guess I have to get a DA polisher.

        Thanks everyone.
