  • NXT over wax

I know this has been (semi) addressed before but I thought I'd ask it as a straightforward question.

Is there any problem with putting NXT 2.0 over a carnauba wax and will the NXT "strip" or remove the wax in any way?

    Re: NXT over wax

Actually, this is a "hot topic... NXT is not a cleaner/wax, it's not intended to provide the kind of cleaning action you associate with a real cleaner/wax or even a paint cleaner.

That said, anytime you rub a liquid over a waxed surface using some kind of application material and some level of pressure there's at least the possibility that you're going to affect the coating already present on the surface.

How you effect it is the question. Do you add to it? Or take away from it?

What is the other wax you're applying?

Do a search using the term layer or layering and you should bring up some related threads.

MIKE I'm really surprised at your answer.
I used NXT on a air conditioner that had been in the weather all summer and it cleaned and removed all the dirt and whatever was on it and made it look like new.

You make the point, rubbing some kind of liquid, with some kind of applicator over any surface with some level of pressure is going to have a cleaning effect.

You can modify all the above factors until the cows come home so there's no way to tell somebody definitely if one product will remove another product when you don't know all the things that will influence the process.

There's always people trying to top one wax with another wax, this thread is an example, so just to point out, Meguiar's doesn't officially have a recommendation for topping one type of wax with another type of wax to gain anything in appearance or protection, or longevity.

Yet that doesn't stop people from asking what products can be used and how all the products will react.

We don't have answers to these kinds of hypothetical scenarios. Besides all this, the OP never mentioned what he was applying first, as in what type of Carnauba wax he was using. We don't make a straight Carnauba wax, all our waxes that contain Carnauba are also "Blended Waxes", that is they're blended with other ingredients. So the next question will be,

Will NXT bond to the first applied wax?

Again, Meguiar's doesn't have a recommendation for what's commonly called Topping. We don't recommend topping, but since we know it's a popular thing to do, we wrote a how-to article on how to take an intelligent approach to the process to try to help insure people aren't just wasting their time. While the title reads, "Topping NXT", the information presented will apply to applying any wax or paint sealant over any other wax or paint sealant.

        Topping NXT

You could probably have used a liquid hand cleaner, or skin lotion, or mayonnaise with a piece of terry cloth to clean off your air conditioner and cleaned the paint and restored some level of appearance value to it, but that doesn't mean these substances are cleaners.

Heck you could rub spit on the paint of your neglected air conditioner and improved how the paint looked.

Point is NXT isn't a cleaner/wax and whether or not the OP can layer it over his other choice of wax is an unknown. Depends on the type of wax and how he applies the NXT

My personal thoughts on this are he probably can't and that's not how I would approach created a beautiful finish or protecting the paint, I would apply two thin coats of the same product.
