  • Your impression of Ford OEM paint?

I have been buffing the previous owner's sins out of my new to me black F150 and I must say that the scratches and swirls are a real beast. M83 with the PC barely budged the swirls, and couldn't touch the scratches. Then I went to M83 on a 8006 with the rotary and results were only slightly better. I stepped up to M84 with a 7006 and had to make several passes to get the "majority" of the scratches and swirls out. On one side of the bed I just went with M84 and a wool pad to get things done, but now I have to remove the swirls from that step which is another chore.

So is Ford clear known for being really hard, or did I just get lucky?

    I totally agree!

Ford paint is mostly pretty hard. However, it does respond nicely to a compound on the rotary.

There are some other Ford paints that are super soft. Our Expedition has a base coat / color clear that is super soft.

I guess I should have mentioned that this is a 2006, and I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

I have to use M83 on mine as well.

I am still on the fence about this...our F-150 is as soft as Single Stage paint. DC Paint Cleaner will remove a scratch in the same time rotary with M80 will. It's super soft and scratches if you look at it. I have done everything in my power to find out if its single stage paint or not and according to my tests, its clear coat. I worked on a 1997 Expedition a couple weekends ago and a rotary with M80 barely made any progress.

So basically, I have no idea...

I have an 04 f150 black... i went at it this past weekend with a DA and M80...it took "most" of my swirls and scratches out... there are still some straight line scratches that wouldn't come out from brush and tree limbs.. but definitely WAAY better than it was before I started. I haven't ordered extra pads to try M83 on it yet... that will be for the next go around.. but i've heard some of the f150's have soft paint and some have hard paint.... kinda weird.

I wish mine had paint that hard I would not need to be so careful while washing.

my 99 metallic green 150 has what I will say is medium hard paint. What I mean by this is that 1 pass of 80 got 95% of the swirls out of the paint and a second pass got it swirl free. I now know that when it was swirled that bad that 83 will get it done in one pass and then 82 or 80 for a final haze removing pass will really make my truck pop.

I can't comment on how hard it is to do machine-work on Ford paint seeing as I do everything by hand, but I will say that I hate Ford paint! It's so full of orange peel it isn't even funny, and what really annoys me is popping the hood and seeing where they didn't completely paint the inner fenderwells. Also if you remove the upper hood liner, there is no paint underneath it. Look in the opening between the fender where the door is, yep... no paint. Pop the trunk and look around the water-drop area, if there's paint, it isn't pretty.

I mean, it's Ford, and it's OEM paint... so you can't expect perfection, but they could have at least put a little effort into it.

Ford paint is a pain. My 08 Black F250, 06 Black Saleen and 03 Black Expedition are an interesting trio.

....or maybe I am a glutten for punishment for getting 3 black vehicles.

Doesn't work like that, I wish.

BLACK Ford paint is a pain. The orange peel, hardness and thinness of the paint ****.

Thats true, especially on the trucks. I found the course of action to get out the defects in the paint. I had to use a wool pad with 84 to get out the major scratches (tree scratches), followed by 84 with a 7006, and finished with 80 on a 9006....all with a rotary.
*For the record I could have went 83 then 80 after the 84/7006 combo, but that just would have added a step.*
