  • Using a duster with Quick Detailer?

Hi everybody, I don´t know if this question was posted before, but I´m new to Quick Detailer, and I´d like to know if is necessary to use a duster before it, and what duster do you recommend, (Is Meguiar´s duster still available?). I found a Turtle Wax duster in a store near home, but I doubt if is a good choice, thanks for your attention.

Re: Using a duster with Quick Detailer?

A car duster is an option for removing dust instead of using a microfiber with a quick detailer or in conjunction with a microfiber and a quick detailer, it really comes down to personal preference. Some people love to use car dusters while other's don't.

The Meguiar's car duster is no longer available from Meguiar's but you can sometimes find it from online detailing supply websites.

Quick Detailer and other "Mist & Wipe" products like Quick Detailer are for removing,
    • Light dust
    • Fingerprints
    • Smudges and smears

Quik Detailer is also great for a clay lubricant.

If your car's paint is dirtier than light dust, then you should probably wash it using a normal car was soap and water.

If I use a QD or WW, I still always use a duster beforehand. It's not very often, I find it easier and safer IMO to just wash it.

The Meguiar's duster can be found, but it is discontinued. A California duster works well too. ADS has a MF duster. Rick doesn't sell things that don't work.

Thanks for your responses, finally when it comes to using the duster, is it a 100% safe to use it? well I mean giving it the appropiate use. And what about the Turtle Wax one?

Do you mean will using it scratch your car's paint?

Guess that depends on how dirty your car is and how you use it. The fibers that are used for a duster in and by themselves is moved gently over the appropriate surface for which the product is intended to be used on shouldn't scratch paint.

You might want to contact the manufacture of the you own or are going to buy and ask them this question and see what they say.

For me, I usually end up getting swirls from QDing rather than dusting, however that works???? I either dust, or wash about 99% of the time. If I use a QD, it is right after I wash.

If a duster is used properly, it should not scratch the paint surface. I have been using the same California duster for 5 years on my Z and do not believe it has scratched the surface. I use it during car shows to keep it looking clean and dust off the car before putting it back in the garage. After it is dusted off then I go around the car with UQD and a Supreme Shine to remove any bird bombs, bugs or other cantaminents I find.

I have actually removed some heavier dust with it as well from dusty conditions outside. In these cases I will do one pass and then brush the duster off with my hand to remove loose particles then go back for another pass and continue. Even with light dust I constantly shake the duster out by running my hand over it to remove loose particles.

              Hope the info is helpful.

For light dust I do the same... Usually only a day or two worth of dust, if more than that I wash.

That's basically how I do it too. I let it go for 2 days, so now I'm planning a wash tomorrow (if all goes well).

Seeing that you have a black Chevy and can use a duster without scratching, I'm gonna have to buy one. I've been scared to use one on my paint, but living in the country, my dark blue metallic Silverado gets so dusty (even by the morning after a wash) that it's impossible to keep clean. I've used QD within 12 hours of a wash without dusting first and I'm convinced it swirled my paint; just my opinion. If car crazy people on here believe in dusters, I guess I will too.

Add another vote for the dusters. I really can not remember how long I have been using one. I really believe that I have not scratched the paint using it. Just like others have stated, Shake it out often.

I've used a California Duster since they caught on in the late '80s. On a car that's simply dusty, they're fantastic and safe -- and don't require using a consumable product like UQD, saving money, time, and the environment. Of course, a duster doesn't offer the wet look of UQD, so if I'm looking to make the best impression, I dust, then UQD. Mostly, though, I use the duster, and love it.

Just remember it's a duster and should be just the fibers touching the car. Don't push so that the duster is actually pressing hard against the paint.
