New here some questions please?long

Hi i am new here and want to detail my 07 red dodge ram. Paint is in pretty good condition minor swirls scratchs. I have a pc 7424 but have never used one.
I plan on following the 5 step system i have read about, this is what i am thinking i am going to do. any suggestions?

1.Wash-Meguiars gold class shampoo
2.clean/prep- meguiars clay, than m80 speed glaze (which pad+speed?)
3.polish- pure polish (not sure which one? pad, speed?)
4.protect- 2 coats NXT tech wax (pad+speed?)(paste or liguid?)
5.maintain-Meguiars quick detailer

This is what i plan to do, how am i doing so far? Anybody have any insight/tips. I think the main things i am not sure about is the pad to use and the speeds. Also what is better to remove the products, just a microfiber towle or use the machine? for the machine what do i use? sorry for all the questions i am new to this and VERY overwhelmed with all the info i have read. Thank you

Pads for the cleaner/polishes ie 82,80,83 would be the 8006 polishing pad set to speed setting 5 for defect removal. For a pure polish like 80 hand polish, dc2 or 7 show car glaze the pad would be 9006 finishing pad set at speed setting 3 and removed by hand. For your LSP(last step product) again use a 9006 finishing pad at speed setting 3. It is your preference on liquid or paste I have used both and like both. I like to remove wax/sealant with the machine, use a 7006 cutting pad with a micro fiber bonnet wrapped around it set at speed 5. One thing you need to remember is to dedicate a pad to each product you use. Do not use multiple product on one pad as this could become counter productive for you. You could instill swirls and not know if they came from a pad,or a product that did not break down completely . You have a full size truck like I do. I have 5 pads for each of my cleaner/polishes so when one gets saturated I get a dry clean pad and continue to polish out the paint. You may want to look into UQD for the maintainence part of you plan, it really adds that extra pop. I hope this helps and feel free to ask anything else.

Most people try to move the polisher too quickly and tackle to large of an area when doing the "Cleaning" step.

You said we should use 9006 pad on the dc2? I was told to use dc1 and dc2 with a 8006 pad, and to use nxt wax with a 9006?

Pure polishes arent going to do anything cleaning wise, so you may as well used the gentlest pad with a gentle product.

Using a stronger pad than needed could lead to a bit of marring if the finish was sensitive.

So right now i am using the 5 step procedure..
wash
clay
dc1 - paint cleaner
dc2 - polish
wax - nxt

I should get TWO 9006 pads and ONE 8006 pad then? cause i was told in another thread i should get TWO 8006 pads and ONE 9006 pad.. =\

I'd get 2 of each at least... but yes.

Here are the generalities:

A pure polish and a pure wax should have the 9006 pad.

A cleaner/wax could go either way, depending on the situation.

A cleaner or cleaner/polish will usualy have the 8006 pad. But for a mild cleaner/polish (#9/#82), you could really use either pad as well.

You want more W-8006 polishing pads versus W-9006 finishing pads.

The longest step is the cleaning step, that's the step where you'll be removing the below surface defects like swirls and scratches. At a minimum, you want 2-3 polishing pads for this step and usually more is better, that way as your pads become wet with product you can switch to a dry pad.

You typically use the finishing pads for applying your wax of choice and you only make two to three gentle passes over each square inch to spread the wax out over the paint. This being true, you can apply the wax to your car using only one finishing pad.

Guys, i dunno about you but these pads are crazy expensive here and i dunt wanan get any more pads then i need..

Just today i went out and bought

backing pad
8006 pad
9006 pad

and it ran me $90 thats AFTER getting 30% discount on the pads....

I only got 1 of each because i still am wondering which pad i need to apply my DC 2 Polish... Getting mixed information here.. Mike, please reply..


Oh, and i read what u wrote about needing 2-3 pads for the cleaning step.. that'd cost a lot.. so i was wondering if its possible to do a whole car with one pad.. i have a TL btw...

Your plan looks good to me. Just speaking from experience 80 speed glaze has a lot of the same trade secret oils that 81 hand polish(pure polish) has. You may find that by using a pure polish may or may not add anything to the finished look of your Ram. I suggest doing a test spot on 2 locations next to one another like on your hood. Use an area about 18x18 for your test. Do your revised complete plan on one side, then omitt the pure polish and after you finished both test spots take it into the sun and see if you can see a difference. You will see for yourself what looks better to you. Again I hope this helps you out.

I think i have the basic idea of the process down. It seems i just need to try diffenent products and see what looks best to me. correct? Also i have read the m26 looks good also but last longer than the nxt? Thanks again i am sure i will come up with a whole lot more questions. lol

Hey Mike, whats your take on pads for a pure polish?

W-8006 Polishing Pad.

The W-9006 Finishing Pads are pretty soft for applying a pure polish, prefer a W-8006 myself.
