Hey, everyone! I'm thinking about getting myself a D.A., but not knowing anything about them want to find out which one will be better to get - G-100 or Porter Cable 7424? What's the difference between them anyway, besides price, of course. And also what kind of backing plates will I need? Cutting pads, polishing, finishing? Ultimate bonnet? Please help, since I still am applying products by hand, and I takes too much time. Thanks in advance.

The only advantage that you order the G-100 is: Meguiar's lifetime warranty (and this is the only reason that I bought it from meguiar). You can check with Porter Cable and find out how many years of warranty that they offer.
Cutting Pads are for rotary polisher only - - - no need to purchase.
If you are buying the G-100A, get 2 polishing pads (apply wax / polish), 2 finishing pads (apply wax / polish) and 2 ultimate bonnets (remove wax / polish). Don't forget to buy some ultimate wipes (micro fibre towels).
You can check with Meguiar and see whether they have a special package for the above.

I bought my G100 in 1995 as part of a Concours kit. Meguiar's still offers this Concours kit. Check it out on their web site to see if you need/want the additional products.
Along with the G100 I'd order a couple of pad packs consisting of 2 polishing and one finishing pad (WDAV99-B).Jim

Interesting comment…I use a Lake County (yellow) cutting pad on both a PC7336 and a Cyclo model #5
A PVC storage case for the machine is available from Porter-Cable P/T # PC892163

I also use a Lake Country cutting pad and even the maroon Megs cutting pad on the PC frequently, no issues. I also use them on the rotary

Hey,
Meguiar's does not recommend using the W-7006 Cutting Pad with the PC. Moreover, from my experience I have found that the PC's action combined with the aggressiveness of the W-7006 tends to dull down the finish. Even followed with subsequent steps with less aggressive pads and products, the finish just does not look as deep and glossy as it could be. If you use the W-7006 pad with the rotary as it was designed for, it leaves an incredibly deep, glossy surface. Just IMHO!
Now, how the Meg's pad compares to the aggressiveness of the LC pads, I do not know. Perhaps, this why some have had success with a cutting pad.

I suppose one should stay away from the maroon pad on a PC on a late model finish but how does the maroon compare to the yellow Lake Country cutting pads? People use them on PCs constantly :nixweiss

Just to chime in here,
I too have used wool cutting pads with the PC and I have used the W-7006 cutting pad with the PC. I find both of these to be safer to use on single stage finishes versus clearcoat finishes because typically single stage finishes are easier to work on.
Clear coat finishes are easily dulled and easily scratched, in a person dulls, scratches, swirls or mars their clear coat finish using a PC and they are not proficient with a rotary, chances are good they will not be able to remove the defects and restore a crystal clear finish.
I know I have posted this multiple times and here it is again, the PC doesn't offer the same cleaning and polishing effect that the rotary offers. Thus it is limited in what it can do. More and more I see a trend where people are trying to remove defects with a PC that the PC is not capable of removing and the correct tool for the job would be the rotary buffer. The envelope is being pushed to the limit.
Can you use an aggressive pad on a clear coat? Meguiar's does not recommend this because the potential to cause damage is too great. Damage that most enthusiasts don't posses the tools, nor the skills to undo.
That's why we recommend staying with the softer pads like the W-8006 and the W-9006.

Hi Mike,
Yeah, this 15 year old white clear I'm complaining about almost makes my Audi clear seem pretty straight forward. I got the rotary due to the difficult clears I have and I just have to work up enough nerve to try it on the white paint. I'm not ever going to attempt this until I feel proficient at using it on the sides of a car. Hope I can establish some confidence in that area.
I use the PC now primarily for eliminating any micromarring on the Audi. So far, although somewhat involved and lengthy, I get decent results.
Speaking of wool pads, I sure like them to polish mufflers. Next time around I'm going to try them with the rotary too!

do both PC7424 and G-100 come with Velcro backing plate? Is it necessary anyway? And what is it for?
