  • what did i do wrong?

i spent the day at mums for a bbq and thought what a great opportumity to try out the plethora of meguiars products i've just bought

my goal was to remove some slight swirl marks in the bonnet or my red eunos (or mx3 in the USA i think). heres what i did :
    • clean with meguiars gold class wash and lambswool glove
    • dry with meguiars microwipe chammois
    • meguiars clay bar using goldclass wash & water as lubricant
    • wash off residue with lambswool mitten and dry with chammois
    • apply meguiars swirl remover 2.0 with rotary buffer - remove by hand with 100% terry towel & microfibre polishing cloth
    • apply meguiars showcar glaze number 7 with rotary buff - remove as per above
    • apply meguiars gold class polish by hand & remove by hand as per above

basically my car is soo damn shiny its amazing but the swirl marks have still remained. I'm curious if any1 might have some ideas what i could have missed here? do i need to do more than one pass of the swirl remover?

below is a pic of what i tried to remove- please excuse the poor quality u can see what i mean if u zoom in

please not the rotary buffer was used at a medium to slow speed and applied with even pressure. Ive seen some amazing transformations on here from junkyard to flawless finish - i've obviously done something not right here
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - i have a car cruise at the end of the month and would love to show off a flawless shine

    Hey,

    A couple of things:

You did not say what pad or speed you were using with the rotary. Also, with #9 Swirl Remover be sure to work it in but remove while still slightly damp. If you buff it dry, you may add more marring back into the surface. Finally, unless the cotton towels are very high quality, I would stick to very high quality MF towels.

    Cheers!

      hi tim

i used a meguiars 8006 pad - its a new rotary buff so im not too sure of speed i'd say around the 1500-2000 rpm. all the cotton towels were meguiars as were the MF.

I'm curious u say about while it still slightly damp - how long would u spend buffing an area before you removed it by hand? i can imagine only a very short time - i was a lil concerned about over using the product on the pad ( i did the recommended X pattern)
are there any videos which might show me how to "work it in"?

by the way i didnt notice til now but - happy birthday for the 8th

        Hey,

Thanks for the birthday wish!!! Mike and Lynn had a really nice Birthday message set up for me, but the hacker wiped it out and everything else from that day!

As for the rotary speed, when working with a polish or fine swirl remover, I would slow the speed down to ~ 1300 RPM. Buffing at a faster speed will cause the product will break down way too quickly, leading to a dry buff situation. Dry buffing may place swirls back into the surface.

I would also suggest using the W-9006 Finishing Pad. If your paint is slightly on the soft side, the W-9006 would be a better pad to use, IMHO.

For #9 or #82 I would suggest removing while still damp. In other words, as long as there is some residue that has not turned to dust/powder, you should be fine.

The towels you have are not the problem. I only use the Meguiar's Ultimate Wipes and have had no problems at all! Great Towels!!

Something else to try, spray a little #34 Final Inspection on the area you plan to buff. Lay the bead of product on the paint (you use the "x" at the beginning to prime the pad. From that point on, use only a 6-8" line of product on the paint itself) and buff the area. The #34 will give you a little longer buffing time but will also cause a lot more sling so cover everything!

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!
