  • Cleaning the Under Body

As spring is coming closer and closer and as the snow is (hopefully) no longer it is time to clean the under body. What procedure should I follow and what products should I use to throughly clean the salt covered under body?

Start with water and lots of it. I spray the underside about 30 seconds in each section I do. Gets all the salt off.

Northern Tools has a Under Car Cleaner. I've thought about getting one, as some of my customers ask for this service. But I have not yet, so I have no idea how it works.

I run through a gas station touchless wash a few times in the spring. Make sure to get the package with the undercarriage wash. I know it's not the Meguiar's way but works good and is quick and easy.

In the spring when we get heavy rains and the streets flood and people drive around the water I drive right through it.
Now I'm talking about two or three inches is all but if I go through them fast it sounds like it is tearing the fenders off.
          CHEAP underside wash.

Those coin op places can be good for this kind of thing. Spray some soapy water, then rinse around under there. Maybe dont use the hardest blast setting.

The video for that Northern Tool thing looks interesting, hard to say if there is enough volume of water/pressure to do a real dirty job.

I just toss a lawn sprinkler under the car and move it around.

Apparently it can spray 3000 psi at 3 GPM which is very high powered. I am really curious about the unit as that would come in real handy after a rough winter with salty roads.

The North Star under car washer that Northern sells would be handy. But, at $129, that's a tad steep for your average weekend warrior. $8 at a touchless car wash with and undercarriage wash might be a better investment twice per year (before waxing, as those sprays and chemicals can be hard on your finish).

If you have a garden sprinkler that is one of those over the top rather than rotary ones, you could use that I guess.

That northern tool undercarriage wash does look very interesting. But its to pricey for a weekend warrior. Like me. The sprinkler under the car has potential. I just can't believe it would be strong enough to do a thorough cleaning.

I either go to the coin-op or (I am lucky enough to have my own power washer) roll that out and give the undercarriage a good cleaning in the driveway.

Same here. Luckily I don't live where they salt the roads so this is works for me. If I did live where they salted the roads, I'd probably go to a touch-less car wash with the undercarriage cleaning and go through that a few times to start off with.

The sprinkler is not a bad idea, we used to do that after some serious off-roading and the trucks would come back weighing a whole lot more than they did when we left, if you know what I mean. Not sure how good it would work for a car, may not be enough room for it to be effective. Also, not sure what it takes to get rid of all the salt residue.
