  • mustang detailing. crevice problems

everytime i wash the stang there are those trouble areas to get all the water. i know most if not all cars suffer from this. my trouble areas are the trunk, hood scoop and doors. i have a leaf blower but that doesnt seem to do the trick, although it doesnt leave as much water. i open the trunk and dry the trunk. still the next day i am greeted by water marks. anyone have any advice to make these stop. also, i use the detailer the next day over the water marks, is this ok?

My Crossfire isn't too bad in this regard, the Camaro is definitely worse, but the PT Cruiser is a nightmare about hidden water - it's everywhere after a wash! The thing that works best for me is to use my wet/dry shop vac to **** the water out and it works great. I hold the end of the vac hose so that my index finger is touching the paint to avoid scratching and I run it along all the window trim (the rear hatch window trim will drip for hours if I don't do this), on the cowl trim, around the head lights and tail lights, and even around the lug nuts on the wheels.

With any of the cars if I do miss something and find a drip the next day a quick shot of Ultimate Quik Detailer gets rid of it.

I've got an '07 GT that I get the same problems from. Not too badly, but I get it on occasion. Usually, where I get it, is runoff from under the headlights. It wants to work itself loose when I start waxing the front bumper; all the vibration starts working it loose. I've found that taking a chamois and putting the edge of it under the headlights, then working it back and forth wiggling it to pick up the excess water, helps.

As for the trunk, I get water that comes off the underside of the spoiler; the only way for me to get that taken care of is to slip the chamois underneath it and work it like I'm polishing the back side of a shoe. That worked well at getting rid of the water. The rest of it, I pop the trunk and leave it open when I wipe down the car, to let the water kind of run down into the grooves surrounding the trunk rubber, then wipe it down with a terrycloth towel (most of it's pretty dirty around the rubber).

I do the same thing around the gas cap; there's a lot of dirt that'll sit around the filler neck when I wash the car. It seems to be a natural gathering point. So, I spray it down with some QD to get it to lift and wipe it away with the Terrycloth towel.

The one thing I've had problems with is the GT logos on the side of the car; I'll get wax buildup around the edges of it, and sometimes I'll get gunk that'll build up. So, I bust out a q-tip and run it through the middle of the logo, and around the edges; it works pretty good at cleaning out the wax.

Mustangs definitely have tricks, and by the things you are describing, I'm guessing a 1999-2004 Mustang GT?

Hood Scoop- open the hood and sort of drop it. It will make a lot of the water come out. Take a towel, wipe the honeycomb inside, and then stick the towel in the scoop and let it soak up the rest of the water.

Trunk (the worst area IMO)- hold a towel at the corners of the third brake light. Water loves to hide there. Be sure and dry the license plate area well, lots of water there. Pop the trunk and wipe underneath, lots of water. When you close it, more water will come out. After all of that, run the towel under the taillights and soak up what's under there.

Doors- open them and wipe around the entire perimeter of the door, then proceed to wipe the door jambs down. Close the door, wipe any water that comes out. Wait about 10-15 minutes for any remaining water to come out and wipe it up.

C-Pillar- run a towel underneath to get the trapped water out of there.

Headlights- run a towel underneath to get the trapped water out of there.

Side Scoops- just soak up whats run to the bottom.

Gas Cap- open it and get what's hiding in the groove.

That's all of the trouble areas/tricks I can think of right now. Mustangs really do hold water very well. It takes me just as long to dry mine as it does to get all the stuff out and wash it!

x2, I do this as well.
Sometimes I invert it and I use is like a blower, really good and with a clean water magnet I dry it.
