  • Avoiding wax residue on large Charger Daytona hood decal

I have a 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona in Torch Red. I have, up until now, taken it to Fine Details every Spring for a clean-up and wax. They claim that they are using Meguiar's wax, but I question if this is really so. When I wax my Corvette, my fingers glide across the paint; a define difference to what the paint surface felt like before waxing. When I get the Daytona back from the detailing shop, I feel no difference to the paint surface. I would like to start waxing the Daytona myself, but worry about which wax to use around the large black HEMI decal on the hood. Waxes, in the past, would go milky white when they contacted an auto decal of any kind. The hood decal has the word HEMI die-cut into it and to wax the lettering which is actually the paint of the car, requires me to carefully wax without getting anything on the surrounding decal. Does Meguiars produce a wax specifically for cars with large decal issues like the Daytona?

Hot Topics is a dedicated forum for topics that are deemed worthing of being in this forum. If you're not sure where to post a thread then Detailing 101 is a good catch-all.

We'll move this to Detailing 101

The answer to this is "no", we don't make a wax specific to the type of decals the factory places on a car's body panels. All our waxes are formulated to protect and beautify paint. The M26 and M21 and NXT Tech Wax are all fairly low staining waxes as long as you remove any accidental wax off textures that tend to stain as soon as you can to start with.

For things like decals and pebble textured plastic trim, Meguiar's recommends slowing down and avoid getting wax on to these surfaces when working on your car.

I've been using NXT for a couple of years now, on my Mach 1. It seems to work well with the black decals on the hood and rocker panels. No discolouration at all.

I have a 2006 TORRED Charger Daytona R/T (Torch Red is a Mustang color).

            You have 2 options:

            1) Tape around the decals with painter's tape
            2) Try your best to avoid hitting them

I use #21 sealant and it wipes right off in most cases, but a shot of Quick Detailer on a Microfiber will remove the rest.

Polishes are the bigger problem. They can discolor the vinyl decals.

I taped for the polish stages and just did my best to avoid them for the wax process.

Mother's Back to Black will help keep the rich dark matte finish on the decals.

So will Gold Class Trim Detailer.

Apply with a soft foam applicator pad, work the product gentle over the decal. Allow this to penetrate for about a minute and then gently wipe any excess off using a clean, soft microfiber polishing cloth.

This will give flat black paint and flat black decals a rich, dark black finish without making the surface shiny like smooth paint.

                Thanks Mike - I didn't know a good Meguiar's equivalent.
