  • BAD BMW Brake Dust Removal!

I spend about 20 minutes this morning trying to get off the infamous BMW brake dust with clay. I can say after trying everything else this is definitely the best route. It is not for the weak of heart haha. You really have to work the clay. I just used clay and quick detailer.

This brake dust has been BAKED on for probably a couple years. This is the start

After about 5 mins of claying

After about ten mins of claying

Finally after a good 20 mins

This stuff was so bad. I could not pick it off with my nails or anything.

        Nice work!!

PBR Metal Master Blue pads are very popular for Mercedes / Porsche / BMW to cut down on brake dust.

I agree my boss's X5 used to have this problem until I suggested the same modification.

20 minutes claying per wheel? That is one great job you did there. Way to go. Excellant results.

I wish 20 mins per wheel. 20 mins for just that small section. I will look into the pads.

              thanks guys

Ugh... The owner of BMW Sporty Utility had the same kind of problem with his wheels...

Think Toshi aka cafemoc did some claying on his wheels but it didn't take as long or as much work...

I think Hawk and EBC also make low dust BMW pads.

The factory pads on my PT created a ton of dust and the Hawk HPS pads reduced it by about 85~90%. The factory pads on my Crossfire dusted probably twice as much as the PT did - I had to clean them every 100 miles or so, it was just insane. I installed Posi-Quiet Ceramic pads on all four corners a couple of weeks ago and I swear they reduced the dust by 99.99%. Truly amazing.

Man...Thank god the wheels on my dad's Z4 aren't like that, since he's got the Turbine style wheels, with tons of spokes on it. To get all of the brake dust removed would be...well...Time consuming just isn't the right phrase to describe it!

At any rate, good luck with getting all of that brake dust off; I'm sure you'll get it off of there eventually so that the wheels look good.

Now that they are clean, they should be easier to keep clean. Maybe next time you could try the professional line of clay to cut down on the time. Were you claying using quick detailer or were you claying with the Aluminum wheel cleaner?

Since the crossfire shares a Mercedes platform that is not suprising.
I'm not sure what it is with Germans and brake dust.

I know quite a few people that use a product like RejeX to keep the dust from sticking. I have a bottle to try this out once it's warmer. I'm not sure what Meguiar's product would be the equivalent.
