  • Finger prints under the clear update w/pic's

I took the car back today and they said it was becuase they didn't remove all of the solvent before they sprayed the clear coat. Does that sound right?

They did say they would fix it. Does anyone know how they will do that? I would assume that they will need to remove the clear coat and respray it but do they do that with chemicals? If so will that effect the "color" coat under the clear?

Sorry for all of the questions but I want to know what I am talking about when I have the work done.

    Here are some pic's.

    Thanks for your help guys.

    Hmm...

This pic almost looks like clearcoat failure:

Just to point out, it would be CC failure (that is exactly what it looks like), but it was recently repainted. That is under the CC.

Re: Finger prints under the clear update w/pic's

Sorry guys I should have been clearer about what happened. There was a small area of damage that was repaired. They then had to spray clear on the entire panel to "match it". What you are seeing is the part of the panel that was just sprayed with clear.

It looks like finger prints to me under the clear. It has gotten worse as the paint has out gased and cured. It seems like it was just bad prep before painting.

My question now is how are they going to correct it? How do you remove the clear coat? Do you have to go down to the primer or can they remove just the clear coat and respray that?

            Thanks guys.

It's really their problem. I would want something in writing that they will guarantee it doesn't happen again for a specific period of time.....like six months or more. They're probably going to have to sand the entire area and hopefully prep the surface properly and re-spray and blend the new CC.

Thanks Mort, I do have two lifetime warranities. One from the shop and one from my insurance company.

I just wanted to know the process so I can try and insure that it is done correctly this time.

If those whitish areas in the picture are a defect that is under the clear coat, then in order to fix the problem they will have to remove the paint in those areas and actually the entire panel at this point and then re-base the paint and then re-clear the paint for a uniform color over the entire panel.

That is what I was thinking, but I don't know a whole lot about how that stuff works so I stayed quiet.

Make them start from square one or it may not come out right (uniform and not noticeable). If they are a good reputable body shop they will know this and you won't have a problem.

Thanks guys. As soon as I showed him he said that it was a problem and said that he would get it fixed. The shame of it is the area that was origanially damaged looks perfect. When I first picked the car up you could not see ANY problems and believe me I would have noticed. It only showed up as the paint cured.

                        I will keep you posted.

It sounds like they are a reputable shop. They took the blame and did not give you a bunch of excuces. I think that they will make it right. Good Luck, hope to see some "flawless" pics soon.

I try to keep it up. Here are some pic's of the rest of the car. Not bad for a 8 year old car.
