  • Is rimwax special?

What is so special about rim waxes?
In the Netherlands it is becoming a real hype to put special rim wax on
your rims, but is this wax really special or is it just marketing?

I normally put NXT-wax on coated rims.

    Thanks Evert.

    Re: Is rimwax special?

Ive always used NXT on my rims and it seems to last just as long as the wax on the paint. Im not to sure if there is actually a difference or if its just a bunch of hype.

I never use a rim cleaner since I dont need it(ceramic brakes) and I dont drive in the rain very much at all.

I clay and #21 my Clear Coat alloy wheels. I also avoid the wheel cleaner and just wash them like the paint -- using Hyperwash these days.

        Re: Is rimwax special?

Probably more marketing spiel than product performance, thus the reason most people just use a quality wax intended for automotive paint on their wheels should they choose to wax their wheels.

If this product is better than a quality car wax that means it's overcome heat issues associated with wheels due to heat transfer from the brake components, and it's become resistant to wheel cleaners which if a wheel cleaner is strong enough to remove brake dust and road grime by simply spraying it on and then rinsing it off, then it's likely strong enough to remove any protective coating sitting on the surface also.

The the reason most people find waxing their wheels a true "Maintenance" procedure in that you need to do it often in order to "maintain" the protective coating on the surface and if you're applying wax often then as long as you're using a quality wax you're doing about everything you can to protect the finish on the wheel and make clean-up as easy as possible.

        Hope that helps...

See the sig line for the last word on any product in the detailing world no matter who makes it.

Thanks very much for your replies.

I think I'm going to make a special "roofwax" and a "bonnetwax" et cetera, et cetera.

Dang, why didn't we think of this...

You'll probably be a very rich man, don't forget the special wax for the indent in door panels where the handle is, this area of the paint often times gets scratched by fingernails and requires a special paint cleaner, polish and a special wax.
