  • Melted my backing plate

I was helping my friend buff some swirl marks out of his black truck last night, and the foam pad flew off the backing plate of my PC. When I looked at it the velcro on the center of the backing plate was melted and sticky. It looked like the foam pad was breaking down a lot too and this is only the second time I have used it. I'm trying not to complain too much because I love Meguiar's and try to get everyone I know to use their products. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I was using #83 and them topped with Nxt. The truck looks great but now my buffing pads won't stay attached very well.

    Thanks, Scott

did your pads look like this? If they did you where using too much pressure and not enough product. see how they start to tear....

        Pictures

Thanks Mike, here are some pics of the backing plate and pad. You can't see it very well, but the pad is a lot thinner in the middle than the sides. I may have been presing a little harder than usual because there were some pretty stubborn swirls, but I made sure I used enough product. To make my friends truck perfect it would need to be professionally buffed with a rotary. I was doing the best I could with what I had. He was amazed at how good it looked after we were finished. He made the mistake a couple of weeks ago of using one of those soap brushes at a do-it-yourself car wash, when he told me and showed me the results and it made me cringe. I already love #83 for it's cleaning and polishing abilities. I used it on my truck and followed with #2 polish and 2 coats of tech wax and it looks better than new. I can't say enough about how much I love Meguiar's!!!

                  Same here.

I had a similar, but not as serious a problem with my Meguiar's backing plate.

About 2/3 of the way through using the GC Paint Cleaner on my '66 Mustang, the foam pad flew off. Thinking it was just a fluke, I put it back on (after cleaning dirt off) and continued. The PC wobbling funny, so I stopped and rechecked the alignment of the pad to backing plate. Good to go. Then I noticed the the backing plate velcro was loose. Upon further inspection, I saw that the the velcro was only being held on by the outside edge of the plate.

I was just a little upset, as it was the first time I had used the PC. I then became more upset, as any of the places where I could get another backing plate were closed on Sunday. Now I would have to start all over, if I could find/get a replacement.

I finally spoke with Tom McDonald at Customer Service a few days later. He asked how fast I was using the PC: 6. He said it was too fast, and that setting the PC at 4 should be more than enough for most everything. He suggested that the heat from using the PC at such a high speed melted the rubber stuff the velcro is attached with. He said he would send out another backing plate, along with a pad, since I washed mine.

He also suggested that instead of washing, to use a clean towel to wipe off excess product. Then let the pad dry. Then use a brush to scrape off any remaining product that had dried.

Something I haven't seen or heard on the forums was an additional tip: Lightly spray the pad with Quik Detailer to prime it before using.

While these forums are great, I wish the Meguiar's products had better, more detailed, and clearer instructions for use. Since I'm currently out of work, I cannot afford to 'experiment' to see what works and what doesn't.

Scarry, that seems to be the same (non Meguiar's) backing plate I have.
                    Later,
                    Ricky
