  • Fadded Paint

I have a yellow 87 corvette rag top. My problem is the part of the back that covers the top when its down has been repainted. The rest of the car is orginal and faded. I just want to get by a little longer until I have it painted. The part of the back next to it when the top is down needs something to take out the fad and bring it closer to the newly paint surface so it wont be so obvious. Is there something that Meguiar's has that can do that without taking all the paint off ? Hope someone can help on this issue.

    Hi Gene,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Here's a quick, simple and inexpensive test you can do to see if you can fix the entire paint job. Go down to your nearest auto parts store and look for a bottle of Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner and pick up a bottle, also pick up some wax applicator pads also, look for some microfiber applicator pads, foam or cotton will do also.

Wash you Corvette and technically at this point you should dry the car and the 'feel' the paint to see if it needs to be clayed, if it does the paint will feel grainy as though it has a texture to it, if it feels glassy, then you're okay.

Besides the claying step, take the paint cleaner and apply some to your applicator pad and then work a section about 8" square very thoroughly with the paint cleaner and after working the product for 50 seconds or so, wipe of the excess, (no need to let it dry it's not a wax), and then inspect the results compared to the paint around it that you haven't worked on.

Does it look better, more clear, richer in color?

If yes, you can restore the paint to perfection with a little passion and perspiration. If it doesn't look any better you can try applying the paint cleaner to the same place 2-3 more times to try to get the clear coat clear again, if you can't do this than the cloudiness or faded look you see could be clear coat failure.

Do this test and let us know how it goes.

Have you ever clayed a car before?
After washing your Corvette, have you felt the paint?

Here's what the product will look like, it's pretty easy to find...

Interesting, we had a guy call us at 6:00am from New York this morning working on a Red Porsche with about the same question and we gave him the same suggestion to test out to see if he could save the paint on his Porsche.

When clear coats get a faded look, you can either fix them because the problem is topical, or you can't because the problem is through the matrix of the clear layer of paint itself, in these cases nothing but a new paint job will actually be the solution.

Click the link below and see if you're Corvette's paint looks like any of these...

Still try the test, it will cost you less than $10.00 to see if you can fix it. If a hand applied paint cleaner will restore clarity then you can continue around the car with the paint cleaner and afterwards apply some wax or we can show you how to create a true show car finish with some other options.

Thanks for the input. No I have never clayed a car. The only part that is faded is the top of the back end. I may have a clear coat failure I dont know even what a clear coat failure looks like . I will try the cleaner. Will get back with you later to let you know how it turned out. THANKS
