OBTW, on the sections of that truck that I worked on, I did clay first. Those areas were oxidized pink, but weren’t crusty or flaking off.

      Same with this car:

Hey Mike when you get a chance later, or Paul, etc,

Since I have not had to work on a car that bad, would excessive dirt (dirt not washing off, but not completly bonded) not behave similarly to oxidized paint that is being removed? That is, just loading up the clay when your pad/cloth could remove some first?

        Thanks for any insight.

          sure will.

Best thing to do is to start out washing the car and washing it as thoroughly as possible, remove as much dirt of the paint as you can by washing it off, if it isn't gone after washing it, then it's time to clay.

Part of the reason for using a cleaner or cleaner/polish before claying severely oxidized finished is to get oils into the paint to improve its condition and/or workability.

Personally, I’d rather see excessive dirt loading a piece of clay than loading one of my good pads. I’d suggest having a beater pad handy if you plan on using it to remove contaminants.

This is accurate based upon restoring hundreds of neglected, antique single stage paints.

Or just take a piece of terry cloth toweling and 'quickly' remove the most of the dead paint by hand using the cloth and a product like M80 and when you're done, throw the cloth away.

If you want to remove the dead paint by machine then definitely use a beater pad and always save your best pads for more valuable cleaning and polishing work.

Sorry for the late response, and thanks to all that have chimed in.

Mike, the car in question is a 2003 Acura TL. There is no oxidation, as I have already inspected the finish.

It is just a bad case of A LOT of dirt being ingrained into the CC. He stated that is was sitting in a junkyard for MONTHS before even being washed ONCE. Even when I clayed the vertical part of the trunk it was tough. Not only that, but the clay was rubbing off RED, which led me to believe the car was a victim of over-spray fallout.

I tried to consumer clay, many times on one side of the horizontal trunk. The trunk literally was ripping my clay apart, and I had a lot of lubrication (I even used the super sized bottle of quick detailer (the older one)).

I tried to look closer to see if it is oxidation, because it feels/LOOKS like it, but no, I'm pretty sure its just paint that needs claying REALLY REALLY bad with an aggressive clay bar.

I was informed of the hazing that the aggressive bar can induce, and am prepared to remove the hazing/marks it may create.

TL, that’s cool. But I was hoping it was an Opel Kadett.
