  • What pad for what product?

Ok, i am kinda new to the whole pc ownership thing, i have a quick question, what pad should i use with what? Here is my list tell me if i am correct???

    Paint Cleaner: 8006 pad
    DC #2 Polish: 8006 pad
    Show car glaze.....can i use a 8006 pad or should i juse a 9006 pad?
    Hi-tech wax: 9006 pad
    cg wax: 9006 pad
    NXT: 9006 pad
ColorX: I have no idea what pad to use??
polymer sealant: 8006 pad...or should it be a 9006 pad??
Dual action cleaner polisher: 8006 pad, or should i be 7006 for really bad paint??
Swirl Remover: 8006 or as stated above a 7006 pad?

So lets see if i understand what each pad is for?

7006: cleaning basically, for very neglected paint??

8006: polishing pad, or cleaner wax's and maybe some polishs??

9006: basically a final wax application pad, and good polish app. pad?

    Thanks guys!

    Hi spotdog14,

You have the basics, with some exceptions.

For the most part, Meguiar's doesn't recommend using the maroon cutting pad with the Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher. It will have a tendency to dull the finish down as it's too aggressive in its action when used on this tool.

Strange as it may seem, if you were to take #84 Compound Power Cleaner with the W-7006 foam cutting pad and buff out a clear coated black finish, if the procedure is performed correctly with good technique, the finish will be clear and gloss with only very light swirl that can be easily removed with a less aggressive product and pad.

Take those same two products on the same finish and chances are very good you will mar the finish. It all has to do with the action of the tool.

For cleaning and defect removal, use the W-8006 foam polishing pad with Meguiar's Cleaner/Polishes, Paint Cleaners in the Consumer Line, Cleaner/waxes and even Pure Polishes.

If the W-8006 foam polishing pad and your choice of the above products are not aggressive enough to remove the defect and leave behind a nice looking finish, then this means the defect is too serious for removal with a PC and it will probably have to be removed with a rotary buffer.

For final polishing or adding a coat of wax, stick with the much softer, W-8006 foam finishing pad.

thank you very much for your help! it has cleared up a lot of questions. So if the 8006 is the basic all around pad to use for waxing and polishing, then what would hte 9006 finishing pads be used for? Also can #83 be used either by hand or with my pc??

      Thanks again!

        Hi spotdog14,

The W-9006 finishing pad is for final finishing, after the work has been done. It is more gentle to the surface.

        Example:

On a neglected finish, you could use the ColorX with the W-8006 polishing pad to remove oxidation, fine swirls ans scratches, staining, etc. This is the work portion of the process where you're working out the defects.

Afterwards, the finish should be smooth, glossy and clear showing the true color of the color coat under neath the clear coat, or in the case of a non-clear coat, revealing the true color of the single stage paint.

Now, if you wanted to take this finish to a higher level, you could apply the NXT Tech Wax, only this time you use a pad that is designed more for adding beauty and protection, not removing defects, i.e. not for doing work.

You can of course use the W-8006 polishing pad for applying pure polishes, polish/waxes, cleaner/waxes and pure waxes, it will work just fine. But when you start to compartmentalize products and procedures to obtain the best possible finish, you start using dedicated products with dedicated pads for optimum results.

        Does that help?

I agree. It's a great wax, just this morning I applied a thin coat to the Pilot after washing and drying it last night. Results are impressive. Wipes on easy, dries almost perfectly clear, wipes off easy, leaves a stellar looking finish. Plus, it smells delicious.

Mike, a newbe question,if i finished my cars off with 2x nxt wax, with the 8006 pad and using the ultimate bonnet,do i have a need to use the 9006 pad ,would this further enhance the finish or not.
