  • what compounds/pads

hey, im planning on detailing some cars this spring/summer. I have a p/c polisher and a rotary buffer. I will be doing some darker colored truck with lots of scratches. what pads would be best for the p/c and what compound for no swirl marks/ deep scratches? before i only used the rotary with a wool pad and a foam after, then wax, can the p/c actually take out deep scratches, with no swirls?
    thanks

    Re: what compounds/pads

The most recommended process is to compound with a product that contains diminishing abrasives like Meguiar's compounds. after that, you need to polish with a good cleaner/polish, and if you want a swirl free finish, it's necessary to do another step with the PC and another cleaner/polish that is less aggressive.

deep scratches can be removed with the PC, but it takes much more time, and it's not very recommended to buff with the PC and a foam cutting pad unless your technique is good at removing micro marring and those kind of defects.

By the way, in order to make flawless finish jobs, you have to have a real good technique.

So I'd suggest you to get that basics:

Diamond cut compound or Compound Power Cleaner (M84)
    Dual Action Cleaner/polish (M83)
    Speed Glaze
    wool pad
    Foam cutting pad (W7000)
    yellow foam polishing pad (W8000)
Pc yellow foam polishing pad (W8006)
    Tan foam finishing pad (W9000)
Tan Pc foam finishing pad (W9006)

    Hope this helps

Depending on how bad the paint is, #83 and #80 are both great products.

You would want to use a W8006 polishing pad with those and a 9006 finishing pad for wax.

thanks for the info guys, for getting no swirls, do you let the p/c spin at all, and what speed do you run at?

Well, referring to the G100 you'll want to use it on a Speed Setting 5 for polishing and to apply wax you should set it to Speed Setting 3, remove wax again move to 5

Don't put that much pressure because the G100 will stop rotating, if you notice that it's not rotating then back up a little bit
