  • #39 & #40 vs Vinyl Top

I wanted to post this sooner but I've been too busy and a bit too lazy I guess. So here it goes. Better late then never.

My mom's aunt in San Fransisco passed away and left her this Cadillac. I think it’s a 1991 with only 17k miles. After having the car shipped all the way to Wisconsin it was pretty dirty. I told my dad that I would do a full detail on it the next time I came to visit but he doesn't understand the difference between a "detail" and a "car wash". So he ran it through the local touchless tunnel wash. When he got home he noticed spots on the vinyl top. Not sure if they where there before the wash and covered with dust or if the wash caused them. He tried wiping them off with a rag and water but no luck.

Here is an overall photo of the car and my supervisor to the left.

Here is what I had to deal with. I tried some #40 with a microfiber, with no results so then I tried some #39 with a microfiber with minimal results. I then tried letting the #39 dwell a bit longer, still minimal results. I tried #39 with a Meguair’s interior brush, which worked better but still not perfect.

I ended up scrubbing for over an hour just to get the half done you see. I then followed up with a few coats of #40. It looks 95% better but still isn’t perfect. My arm was killing me after doing the whole thing. I need to get in shape. lol

Thanks for looking. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might have worked better I am all ears.

Big improvement, that's for sure. You might want to try one of the carpet brushes for the DA on this - work the 39 in with that, but go easy on the pressure and speed until you see where it's getting you.

Looks good, no fun to tackle a project like that. Bad angle to work at as well.

I suppose clay could be a possibility as well if it was something "on" the surface?

There are posts around where people have used the Marine Canvas Cleaner and Protectant with great results.

I like the idea of the carpet brush, along with the G 100. It works great on the carpet. At a low speed, I think it will remove the spots 1,2,3. Good luck.

Thanks a ton guys! Lots of really good suggestions. The car is in storage now for winter but I'll be sure to give it a go this spring.

I've always wanted a carpet brush for the PC anyway and I don't have any blue bottles on my shelf so I think that's a good excuse to get some new stuff.

It almost looks like salt water deposits to me but I could be wrong. Would APC at 10:1 have worked?

                Re: #39 & #40 vs Vinyl Top

                Hey Scott,

                Just to chime in...

I would be very hesitant to use any type of brush on a PC to remove those spots. Vinyl roofs, especially on a car of that age, can be very brittle and deteriorated. Even leaning on it too hard can cause it to crack and/or tear.

I would suggest using #40 and apply it liberally. Allow it to sit on the vinyl in hopes that it will soften it slightly so that you can now try and remove the spots. Then go back and use the #39 and a light brush. Follow this with #40 on a piece of cotton toweling working the #40 into the material...wipe off with a dedicated MF towel.

Again, be gentle. These tops, when they start to break down and tear, you have a problem...

Yes and no...APC or APC+ would work, but one must be careful to not dry out the vinyl more than it probably already is...especially on a car of that age... Hence the reason I suggested to Scott to condition the roof first with a dressing, allowing it to hopefully soften the top and then moving on to the cleaning/dressing steps... .
