Right, it's Porter Cable... AKA here as DA (dual-action polisher) or G100 (Meguiar's DA, made by Porter Cable, but warranted for life by Meguiar's). It's a lower speed polisher that has both a rotary motion and an orbital motion. They don't have the speed or torque to get novice users in trouble like a rotary could.
Take the screw-on side handle off because it keeps you from reaching some places and will only cause you to ding your paint. That's a Mike Phillips' tip.
If the car has features like air scoops or wings that you’re buffing in or underneath you can bash the body of the PC into them.
I always wrap my hand around the metal cowl above the backing plate if I’m buffing under a low wing (and the PC doesn’t have one of OctaneGuy’s PC Guards, which everybody should get for their PC!). That way I bash my knuckles, not the paint.

PC.
I have one and I love it! I bought to protect my rear spoiler while working. The spoiler is the perfect hight, of course!
I guess you could burn the paint if you turned a pad up on its side and let it spin really fast while barely touching the paint.
Be sure to keep the cord over your shoulder since it can marr/scratch the paint.
lol, I thought it was pretty good. Basically, we can only come up with ways that the machine shouldn't be used anyways to cause damage. Shows you how great it is!
If you make the multiple mistakes of using a cutting pad and an aggressive compound, then turn the speed up to six, apply a ton of pressure, then start buffing on a very old car with thin paint, especially on the edge of body seams etc, then you could actually burn through the paint on such an edge. At that point though you would have been doing soooo many things wrong that you shouldn't have picked up ANY machine in the first place.
Although the original post said to "Share your experiences..." it should be noted that I have not personally experienced the above scenario.

Here's a mistake that you only make once......lifting the pc off of the paint while it's still running. Won't hurt the paint, but it sure makes clean-up a bigger job when you're having to remove product from parts of the car you forgot to tape.
