  • Weird scratch/chip

I noticed a couple of weird blemishes on my trunk. They're about pea size and look like tiny scratches in a circular formation. I can't tell though if they are scratches or tiny chips. I couldn't get any decent photos, but I drew what it looks like using Photoshop. I used Scratch X by hand, but it didn't help any. Any ideas what to do?

If they are scratches, vs chips, it may take three or four (or more) applications of ScratchX (applied with vigor) If you're not seeing any results or improvement after a few tries (or you can feel the mars with a fingernail) then you're likely out of luck and would have to settle for touch up paint. How old is the car?

Did you use ScratchX on it a few times with a terry cloth and some elbow grease, and still no change?
It might be throughout the thickness of the clearcoat.
      on, people!

If I'm looking at this correctly, this is a form of clear coat failure. Sometimes, the clear coat will develop cracks from excessive heat - they kinda look like little dashes.

I too would guess clear coat failure. It seems kind of strange they would be on the trunk and not the hood, though. I can see the hood, with the excess heat, but the trunk and not the hood sounds strange to me. That's the kind of clear coat failure I have on the trunk and roof of my truck. If that is what it is, there's not any fixing it. On the plus side, though, it seems to be stopable, unlike other forms of clear coat failure. The CCF on my truck hasn't really gotten worse in the 3 years I've had it (of course I keep a good coat of wax in it at all times).

Upon close inspection, it does look like tiny cracks. Lydia, does yours form a circle like the picture?

Mine are more like x's and dashes than circles.

Completely agree with everyone else. My friend's Civic had that same problem where the clear coat was actually cracking, causing that exact same problem. Respray is the only solution.
