  • HELP! with strange stains

I just agreed to detail my neighbors 1995 charcoal mercedes and the owners wanted to know if I could remove these strange stains on the trunk.

    Three Questions:
    1. What caused this?
    2. Is it removable?
    3. How can I remove it?

    My equipment:

If it helps my neighbors said that these stains gradually appeared like oxidation or something. Thanks for any help!

The photo is soft and hard to tell but it looks like clearcoat failure.

Doh! I assume that that is not repairable w/o a paint job. One more thing, I feel no irregularity when I run my fingernail over them.

I agree with jfelbab, it kind of looks like clear coat failure. Usually clear coat failure is when the clear coat is peeling or lifting off the finish, but this could be the initial stages.

It could be staining however. Does the owner leave the car parked outside most/all of the time? Is it parked under something like a tree, or a leaking roof?

From the pictures, it looks like it's beyond repair with Meguiar's or any companies product. But, you could try a little paint cleaner or cleaner/polish and see if it improves the affected areas.

Sometimes you may not be able to remove a defect, but you can often improve a defect.

i have seen those before, or at least what looks like them. Does he live in an area, or you for that matter, that has a high tree pollen count? I have seen spots develope on my dads 02 mustang and my 01 ranger that look similar. I used body scrub to remove the defects, and a little colorx and scrachx because i didnt use a 100% terry cloth towel. But from wht i can tell is its some sort of tree pollen. At least in my case it was, body scrub would be my first bet...

            Wish you luck!!

            Hope i helped alittle

Yeah, you guys were right. It was CC failure. About 90% of the car's paint is in great condition, but trunk and one spot on the roof have this condition. Only 2 small areas have actually peeled off. This happened when I washed the car. The owner had suspiscions of CC failure. Goodbye bonus for removing stains. Is there any way to darken the areas?
