  • Halogen work light

This post is in the "in case you are interested" category.

Many of my friends ask me what the best lighting is to see swirls. I point to my Craftsman halogen work light. (Sears item #03473925000 Mfr. model #55433) This is a nice dual head, 1000W. unit that extends to 70".

I see in my latest Craftsman Club flyer that this unit is on sale for $17.89 to Craftsman Club members (membership is free) or $19.88 for non members. This unit was $30 not long ago.

IMHO, this is great deal that makes swirl removal a lot more productive.

I have 3 of them. One of the three isn't worth the $20, the other two are OK. They blow through bulbs pretty quickly. They're worth $20, but I have one that I paid $70 for that's easily 3 1/2 times as good; it's sturdier, comes with a nice case, puts out 1500 watts rather than 1000, has a longer cord, and hasn't burned out a bulb in 3 years.

As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

I was just at the mall...Sears has several flavors of these (all but the one in this post, which is catalog/internet only), ranging from $30 to $80, some Craftsman, some another Sears brand (I guess without the lifetime warranty).

I hemmed and hawed and didn't buy anything...one of the things I was concerned about (other than the quality, as mentioned above, they are awfully inexpensive, all made in China) is the height. One was 54", one 70", one 96" (the "professional", which was the heaviest and heaviest duty). I was concerned that the 54 and 70 wouldn't be tall enough to illuminate the swirls on top of the cars (no trucks in my garage). Comments?

PS The nice thing about a some of them was the head comes off, so you can put the lights at ground level, as well as on the tripod.
