Is it possible to remove painted on pinstriping with #80 ?...the car I'm about to do has pinstriping that is painted on and I'm concerned about what the abrasives will do to it. I searched for an answer and couldn't find one...any help, as always, is appreciated!...

Re: Can #80 remove painted pinstriping ?
As light as 80 is, yes it can remove pinstriping. You really don't know what kind of prep work they did before laying the pinstriping down. So if they didn't prep the surface well, or if the pinstriping was a low quality job, there is a possibility that 80 will remove it.
Tape it off whenever possible, or take your chances on removing someones pinstiping2008 Meguiar's Batmobile Team

thanks for the response...that's the plan now since I have no idea about how the pinstriping was done. Better safe than sorry.Bill Poirier

Good choice. #80 will remove some pinstriping quite easily. Just ask me how I know. Lol.Lydia's Mobile Detailing

Re: Can #80 remove painted pinstriping ?
Just thinking out loud here.....if the prep under the pin striping was less than ideal is there a risk of pulling some of it off when removing tape that was applied to protect in the first place???? I'm thinking it would be really bad to lift the tape only to have some sections of pin stripe come with it.Michael Stoops

The quality of pin-striping will vary from car to car and you always want to treat it with kids gloves.
Instead of taping off, what we've done in the past is focus on the task at hand and don't run your buffer over the pin-stripes but carefully run the buffer up to the pinstripes.
See how Shawn and Paul are holding the rotary buffer close to their chests in these pictures?
Do the same thing, keep your polisher close to your body/chest and tighten up your arm, shoulder and back muscles to have absolute control over the tool so it only moves where you want it to go. Don't hold the polisher with your arms outstretched.
Focus on the task at hand, maintain tight control over the polisher and carefully buff up to the pin striping but not over the pinstriping.
After you do the cleaning step, then simply wax these areas and give them a little more attention when applying the wax. By this we mean carefully rub the pinstriping and the surrounding paint with a little focused gentle passion and you should be able to make these areas match the rest of the paint in gloss, shine and clarity. IN most cases you don't need to use a dedicated paint cleaner because the area is small enough just doing a good job of applying your wax will do the trick.
You could also rub these areas out with a gentle cleaner/wax like A12 Cleaner/wax.

Thanks for all the great advice and tips !...I will try not taping it off and running the buffer up to it. CONTROL is obviously huge when dealing with this type of situation. Again, thanks for the great responses !Bill Poirier
